Greenwood Conservation Area is a hidden gem in the Durham area. The town operates a day camp for several weeks each summer called "Survivor Camp" which my daughter had done several years in a row. They have a great indoor space, outdoor pavilions for rent, lots of open green space, BBQs, playgrounds, pond for exploring small creatures and hiking trails along the Rouge River where we have seen ducks, beavers, foxes, owls, huge brook trout swimming upstream to spam, salamanders, deer and anglers along the way. Pack a picnic lunch, wear good walking/hiking shoes for varied terrain and don't forget your camera. There is free parking at several spots in the area around the main entrance if you want to avoid the main entrance and fee for day use areas.
I was looking for somewhere to go one sunny Saturday afternoon that was close to home, and since I hadn't been here in awhile, I decided to return.I forgot how huge this conservation area is and how peacefully and tranquil it is.And there is so much to do, it would be easier to list what you can't do here, but here is a list of things you can do here - hiking, fishing, camping, biking, there is a leash-free dog area, baseball diamond, picnic areas and sports fields. And that's just the summer activities. In the winter you can snowshoe and cross country ski. There are a multitude of hiking trails that range in difficulty (1 hiker is easy, 3 hikers is hard). There are information plaques along different routes that display interesting facts about the area. You can spend as little as an hour or an entire day there. The town of Ajax even holds organised activities such as bike tours, community picnics, etc.The only thing missing from this area is an organised 5km or 10km trail run.
Love this conservation area. I have been to many on the east side of the GTA and this one is as nice as any. There is a leash-free area here too, but many people take their dogs all through the area off leash anyways, so be aware of that. But the trails are varied, and the creek is very nice. Picnic areas to rent, etc. Love this place.
It's a nice area for walking, there are trails, and lost of green spaces. Used to hold our Beaveree here with 1,000 5 ,6 & 7 year old boys. Pickering hiking trail starts here, great place for dogs
Greenwood conservation is beautiful spot to enjoy year-round. Many people enjoy picnics, walking their dogs, fishing, biking, etc. Definitely a place where we like to hike year-round!
We bring the dog here for hikes about once a month. Go to the back of the park and go down the long stairs (good workout). Great when it is dry weather, muddy after a rainfall. Lots of dogs.
I always come here with my dogs for a nice hike! Lots of other dog owners bring their dogs here as well. There are lots of scenic trails that are very enjoyable. There is also a little river that runs through the area where dogs can run and play in the water!
My children enjoy camping here with the Town of Ajax. Lots of green space and stories about Oliver and Oliver's Rest. Oliver's grave is there ... go and visit it.
Excellent facility(pavilion) to have a birthday party with trees and nature all around you. Many trails to walk on from short and easy to a little more challenging/longer. Nothing that the average person could not handle. Excellent picnic areas all over the place and large groups-corporations, family reunions, community organizations etc. often have an annual gathering there. Just minutes north of Ajax so it's easy and quick to get to.
Beautiful , quiet woods with a little river running through it. It has access to the off leash dog park so you get the opportunity to wee and play with the dogs while checking out hundreds of woody paths
