we visited Homer's Tomb during our first ATV- trip on Ios. This is not a spectacular place with great architecture and crowds of tourists. But this is pure beauty of history and nature. Hard and real and peaceful. In my opinion you should go there during your stay on Ios.
instead of looking for this tomb it is much better to climb up the main hill of the city and visit 3 beautiful small white churches at the top of it, then enjoy breathtaking views ...
You need a car to go here and then you walk about 100 meters to the place.Nothing special, but som rocks placed one on top of the others.Being the only special thing to see, it have some charm. But otherwise i would not go to visit. Some rocks, some stones a scenic view over the island and 10-15 spent on the place.Worth going if you have a car and you can spare some 30 minutes.Btw is free to visit. Actually there is no one there.
although it is nothing special, still its worth visiting. its about 30´ from the port with a bike and its better to come in the afternoon when the view is amazing!!!
I just wanted to say many confuse the idea of the rocks. You are not supposed to build your very own rock tribute. You put a stone as a symbol of letting a part of your soul and others who come after you put a stone on your stone and so on and that's how the "tower" rock tributes are built. So you leave a part of your soul and take a part of his soul, as the legend says.
I came across Homer's Tomb as I was looking for Plakoto beach. Parking area and 75m uphill walk to a shaded area with amazing views and a further short walk to the tomb site itself. Visitors have left their own stone designs whilst there. Its a peaceful and serene place. I stayed about 30 mins just enjoying the tranquillity - had the place to myself, one other person arrived and was enjoying the energy as I left. There is nothing else there, no services of any kind. You need your own transport to visit the site.
Bit of a drive from the main town, took a bit over 25 mins on the quad bike it if your looking for an excuse to go for a cruise it's not a bad place to check out. The sight itself is a heap of rock towers that people have created around the supposed tomb of homer. We were alone at the sight and it was a bit eerie! But enjoy the serenity and the view out to see, and of course the winding road all the way back to town!
To get there, its a wide street, so I thought first, here com's a big town or a important monument, but there was only some rocks and none of that. All over the island, there are plenty of chapels, but just on this historical place in "nothing", incredibel.
We visited here on our 50 cc Quad bike which was an experience as there are lots of hills! There's a special road built to take you here which ends at the tomb. We met 1 car on our trip which was great as you felt you were the only person on the island. The tomb needs to be restored but the view of some of the Cyclades Islands from here is great. Ios is still under-developed so this is a peaceful place.June is a great time to come as it's low season here.
Is a place in the middle of nowhere and with nothing to see ! Just some rocks ! If you dont have to much time to stay in Ios forget about it is too far away !You drive some time and after you park you have also to walk like 10Minutes on some rocks and in the end is A Bounch of Rocks !This is it ! I will no go again for sure
