If you visit Almaty only for few days probably you will not get the chance to visit this park. But if you live in Almaty and especially in this area then you would probably go for a walk in it or just cross it on your way to the Green Market or the cathedral. On one side of the park is the WW II hero's monument and eternal flame and on the opposite side is located a very nice and colorful cathedral. Especially the roof is very nicely tiled with tiles of different colors making a very nice mosaic. The park is full of squirrels so you can also have fun feeding them.
With the Zenkov Cathedral, the Memorial Park and the Museum of Musical Instruments located in the park, it is possible to spend quite some time here, as many local residents do.
I visited Panfilov park in Autumn, which is a good time to be strolling the city in general; the weather is cool to mild, and the many tree lined "strip parks" of the town are a joy to stroll. The central attraction is the Zenkov Cathedral (see my other review) but to the front & rear of it there are open areas where people hang out, feed the pigeons etc. There is also a open walled building dedicated to playing chess. It was packed with elderly men (plus one woman) gazing intently on their game. Sadly the grumpy "Chess Camp Guard" shooed us off when he noticed me taking pictures (The whole "Soviet style" Jobsworth thing is still very apparent here in Almaty!) This spot is (guards aside) a little gem of a spot to observe life here)Enjoy...
This park is a great place to spend a quiet, sunny afternoon. The war heroes memorial and eternal flame offer a solemn place for reflection. People still leave flowers at the site, which is a touching gesture of respect. The beautiful tall trees provide a buffer against the noise and bustle of the city, and offers the park visitor some solitude. The park was surprisingly clean and well maintained. The park also has a cathedral, a folk museum and a number of statures/monuments (including one for the soldiers killed in Afghanistan during the 1980s). I would highly recommend taking a stroll through this park if you are in the area. Bring your camera!
Great park... In here you've got the impressive war memorial and lovely cathedral..took a picnic into the park and sat and people watched!
Great architecture, great people watching. In the heart of Almaty, where families and couples go to spend a nice afternoon together. Do not miss it!
Good place to visit while in Almaty, the cathedral is located there along to the eternal flame honoring the war hereos. The president park is better I believe in terms of bigger size, and a wider variety of trees, and plants and a place away from the city.
A very nice central park, mainly known for the Zenkov's Cathedral at its center, but it also has monuments, water basins, a war memorial and at its edge the museum of folk museum - a must to see in Almaty
I recommend to visit the Kazakh museum of musical instruments and also the Cathedral - largest wooden one in the World. Also nearby there is the largest basaar of Almaty - worth of visiting, as well!
