We had one rainy day during our visit and we were saved by a movie. Fun old theatre in the heart of Ogunquit
The original wooden seats are intact, they serve real butter on the popcorn and the family that runs this place are a joy. They are planning both digital and climate upgrades that should position this first-run movie house for the next decades to come. A true jewel in Ogunquit.
This is a classic old-time theater, and a great place to see a movie. Family-operated, it's a wonderful atmosphere. They even serve wine. We'd highly recommend catching a movie there when you're in town.
Love this theater. It was built in 1923, and other than the projection equipment, it hasn't changed an iota since. If you want to experience a movie theater like the ones where your great grandmother saw silent films, this is your opportunity. All original seating including the hat racks under the seats for the gentlemen's hats. Wonderful, historic atmosphere AND they drizzle real butter on the popcorn.
We drove from North of Boston to see Kevin Meaney the comedian at this theater August 17, 2013. The first four rows were designated the VIP seating by yellow caution tape running along the back of the entire fourth row seats which I found hysterical. Before the show started I decided to go to the ladies room and I felt I needed mountain climbing boots as the incline was huge walking up the aisle. When you got to the last row you then made the steep descent towards the one ladies room which reminded me of my Grandmothers closet. The seats were tiny, shows how much larger we've become as a population. This vintage theater sure had personality and I enjoyed the experience immensely.
What a wonderful old theater!!! Very comfortable seats, relaxed atmosphere, you can even have a drink while you watch a movie. To top it off they have wonderful popcorn served with Land O Lakes real butter rather than the chemical oil most theaters use. The theater is owned by a wonderful local family...I highly recommend that you check out a movie at the Leavitt Theater when you are in Ogunquit!
It is a family operated little movie theater! Great old-fashioned atmosphere. A perfect place in this lovely little town.
The Leavitt is a charming older theater in downtown Ogunquit. The location is great such that we were able to wander through town, get dinner and see the 8 PM show. It is a small theater that does not have a lot of bells and whistles, but that somehow makes it sweeter. I don't think it had A/C and often the movies were ones that had been out for awhile, but the theater somehow adds completion, or an extra activity, to the town.
While vacationing in Ogunquit, I went to see a couple of movies at the Leavitt. It's great to have a theatre right in the downtown area and not have to drive to a mall. Movie theatres like this are too far a few between and I do miss them. This one is old, could use some renovations, but then again, it is old. Old, meaning the seats are not the tall back comfy-style stadium seats. They are the old wooden ones with hard padding on the seat and none on the back of the chair. Yes, you can sit through a movie, and I guess that's all that matters, but I did find I got a bit sore and stiff by the end of the movie. They choose somewhat current movies to play, have a small popcorn area, and charge what the large theaters do for admission and snacks. I imagine on a rainy evening or for those who like to stay up later on their vacation (like I do), this appeals to them. I loved being able to go to a 7:15 show and walk across the street to Bread and Roses for a coffee and pastry, and then take a walk to the beach. A little town like Ogunquit is a great place to vacation as well.
Just saw a movie at this place the other night while in town, great old theatre. Really hope they continue for many years!!! If you are in town and its raining or something, looking for something to do, check them out.
