Many people goes to Santiago de Compostela to see the Cathedral, but you should check the Catedral de Ourense. The Pórtico del Paraiso in Ourense was designed by the same person and it is equal to the one in Santiago, but surprise, the one in Ourense conserves the original polychromy, so if you want to check the Portico with the original colours you can not miss the Catedral de Ourense.
Ciao Massimo!
We came here during our recent short trip to Ourense. We've seen a great many cathedrals in Spain and elsewhere and to be honest, it takes a lot to impress us. But this is a nice little cathedral with a marvellous portico that lets you see what the one in Santiago would have looked like many centuries ago. The portico is still coloured and while it may be a copy, it's still great in its own right. You can look at it for hours and still find new things to see.The reredos is also magnificent and there are interesting side chapels too. I suspect that many people who think that the cathedral in Santiago is better and in some ways, maybe it is, but this one has a particular quiet charm that makes it more appealing.
The beautiful "Catedral de Ourense", dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, had its construction firstly started in 550 DC. Over the years, it has undergone an impressive transition of architectural styles: gothic, romanesque, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical - with amazing results. Its construction plan follows the one observed in many other pilgrimage churches: the "Latin Cross" plan. Check the museum, visit the gothic cloisters and admire the unforgettable 13th century's "Pórtico del Paraíso", at the west façade, with its beautiful stone statues. Some still in their original colors. Enjoy!
The figure of Christ on a donkey summed up the humility I felt in this cathedral. Smaller than the average cathedral, it felt homely and welcoming. There are other, more elaborate statues and carvings but it actually felt more like a place of meditation and worship than the grand cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
