This museum shattered our expectations. It is absolutely loaded with terrific pieces of artwork, spanning many years and styles. We were most surprised to find Matisse's Blue Nude housed here, given the complete lack of advertisement about it. This museum is free of charge, and is a must-see to Baltimore residents and visitors alike.
It's a fantastic museum with a wide variety of collection. What's more, it is free! I'm sure there is something for every one's taste.
Finally got myself to the museum and the Cone Collection. Impressive, to say the least. It was also lovely to be in a museum that's not crowded (I live in NYC) although we were there the Saturday before Christmas so maybe that's just a quiet day. Museum facilities are excellent, and we really enjoyed the restaurant. Good food, music and fun contest - staff members had decorated row house models. Didn't have the time or energy to see much of the rest of the collection, but it looked interesting.
Varied collection with some very interesting exhibits. See the Cone sisters Impressionists, see the Lalique hood ornaments !!!
The BMA is a must-do on a trip to Baltimore. Its size allows you to enjoy lots of variety without feeling overwhelmed. Staff greet each visitor at the door with an offer of directions and suggestions. And it's free. As in NO ENTRANCE FEE EVER.And for that almost unheard-of price of admission, even if you see nothing but the Cone Collection, the trip is worth it. You needn't be a Matisse fan (though how can anyone not be?!) to appreciate how this collection is arrayed and curated. Getting to know the Cones, in addition to seeing the paintings, is like a mini-course in Impressionist collecting and history. Take time for the Virtual Tour of the Cone Sisters' Apartments, an amazing digitally-produced visit to their homes, with their collections on view just as they were arrayed in the Cones' lifetimes. Touch the screen and "walk" into and around each room, and make sure to look for Matisse himself standing by a sideboard. Besides all that, the BMA sits in the Homewood section of Baltimore, which many tourists don't see. Nearby are Johns Hopkins University, interesting residential blocks, some good cafes and restaurants, and a beautiful park. Worth a detour from the Inner Harbor, for sure.
quite a variety of art, well displayed, enjoyable experience, take a walk through the John Hopkins university campus too!
We were not really aware of Gertrude's after a nice visit to the newly-renovated and fabulous BMA. The cafe is comfortable, quiet and just the place for a light lunch. Nice menu choices including cream of crab and Md-style crab soup and sandwiches.
Thank you for sharing your love of the BMA on TripAdvisor! Allowing students like yourself the opportunity to visit as often as they wish is one of the many reasons why the museum offers free general admission for everyone, every day. The BMA also offers free audio tours and has a mobile-optimized website with lots of information about the artworks so you can visit virtually any time. As you noted, there is always something new to see. Our curators love to add new objects to the galleries or rearrange them so you can see the artworks in a new way. We look forward to your next visit!
I was really surprised to find this tucked away where it was and couldn't have been happier with it. My family and I had a great time coming in unexpectedly
Not only was the sculpture and art outstanding, but the giftshop was excellent. An added feature, was a wonderful restaurant with outstanding food!
