Great place if you are a history buff. Get a brouchuer at the front gate and read about all the interesting people who are there. A great way to spend a day outside.
One of the oldest cemeteries in NC. Brochures available near the entrance. Located next to the Beaufort United Methodist Church.
I enjoyed learning about the old burying ground such history there, we have been coming here for 5 years and every year I go back to visit this place again.
The stories were amazing especially that of the 11 year old girl and her decorated tomb. A lot of mystery here.
Just one block off Front Street, this is worth the trip. The grave stones are beautiful and the history quite interesting. Wish there would have been the guide pamphlet inside the cemetery as noted, but we went back online to figure a few things out. Great history, location.
The walking tour of the Beaufort Historic Site Old Burying Ground is a must for any history buff visiting Beaufort. The pamphlet available at the Beaufort Historic Association's shop provides an introduction, but the better option is to take one of the tours offered by the Beaufort Historic Association.
Best for kids as not much below the surface. Old buildings staged to share basic history--good for elementary aged kids--you must pay to access. Graveyard is interesting, if a bit unkempt (if warm bring bug spray and wear flats as riddled with roots, rocks etc) and it is free so that is nice. They also run a basic tour bus in summer and weekends--good if those in your party cannot walk the hour or so it takes to see the entire town.
Walk around and feel the past, look at the names and dates and be ready to be moved. Get a brochure at the Maritime Museum and find the graves of the pirates and the captains, and leave a present for the little girl. You'll know what I mean when you see it.
Revolutionary and Civil War cemetery. Be sure to see the soldier buried standing up! Well within walking distance of the Historic District and right by the beautiful Ann's United Methodist Church which is also beautiful at sunset.
The graveyard is extremely old, and if you can, find someone to tell you the stories both fact and fiction of the older graves If not, pick up a brochure. The burying grounds is well-kept and the trees, with Spanish moss hanging from the branches, is perfect for a quick tour ands great spot to develop a summer school report. Well worth taking time from the beaches, shelling and shopping. A little off the usual beaten path, but find it anyway
