The best views of Bilbao all the way up and from Artxanda hill. Very inexpensive and worth it. Feels like the old days in there.
I went up on a clear, sunny day and the view was stunning. It is ridiculously cheap to get up and the view encompasses the old town, the river and the airport.
I was walking on the river from the Guggenheim museum to the Calatrava Zubi Zuri bridge and crossed the river. Just behind ,If you have a couple of hours 'out track' get a way up with the Artxanda Funicular that take you up the hill 300 mt high above the town.Opened in 1915, now is computer operated and no driver is inside.Up the slope, stroll around the garden that offers you an outstanding sight of the River, the Town the major sites you can easily recognize from up there. The locals call it friendly ,'Funi".Open from 7 am to 10 pm, it goes up every 15 minutes and the trip last 3 minutes.Ticket Included in the BIZKAIA Card
We went to the top of the funicular railway in the evening. The view was spectacular as you had a bird's eye view of the whole city. It was a very romantic view and a beautiful walk/park at the top.
A secret attraction of Bilbao. You start from a veruy convenient location, halfway between the Guggenheim and the Casco Viejo, an enjoyable ride up the hill (Artxanda), beautiful views from the top and nice restaurants in Artxanda. Do not hesitate to do it with good weather. With bad weather, though, do someting else; maybe check at the fine arts museum.
If you want a view of the city, make sure the weather is good. We had low clouds and rain on the day we took the funicular and it was an unspectacular view. The park you arrive at is nice and it's a good place for a quick picnic, just not a major attraction.
The funicular takes you some 775 meters ride up to the Artxanda hill. It really costs you only 95 cents which makes it the best bargain since the Staten Island Ferry. The funicular can be crowded, but it's pretty frequent, so the waiting time remains quite reasonable. Apart from the view, there's not that much to see once you are up, so the visit can be done in less than an hour.
Last time a made a mistake by confusing this attraction with a restaurant.Well, I am living since more than 10 years at Bilbao, however I still enjoy this attraction several times a year. First of all, you can use the funicular at the general rate of public transport, which is very reasonable. Than you have a perfect view over the whole city of Bilbao, its just spectacular! There are plenty of restaurants and cafeterías, even luxurious, all of them reasonably priced. You have to select a sunny day for the visit, if it is raining, it is not worthwhile, obviously!
From up there. Easy to find, and the view from up there is amazing, right to the sea. The cafe was closed on NYday but the view made up for anything like that. Also the sculpture of the fingerprint is up there, and we admired that greatly.
tucked away in a back street this is a great way to get a stunning view of the city. a great 90 cents worth!
