We especially appreciated the "Nación y Memoria" exhibition that was a beautiful, inspirational and moving presentation of the history and culture of Colombia. The juxtaposition of some works were striking. Not only is are the memories of Colombia and Colombians presented but the exhibition will live in my memory for some time. The building itself is worth a visit - a beautiful conversion of a 19th C (?) prison. The collection is well presented, and linked with Colombian history. I was particularly moved by the little video of Gabriel Garcia Marquez receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Unfortunately if you don't speak Spanish you aren't going to get much from a lot of the displays. But on the top floor there are some modern art corridors, satirical cartoons and displays on Bogota's recent history that we could yield a little more information from. And anything we did understand was really, really interesting. The building is pretty cool too. Just depends whether you want to pay the fee to not get all of the displays! We have a blog with some more Bogota tips here: https://ednaventures.wordpress.com/2014/10/21/bogota-and-the-worst-hamburger/
Great place to see actual historical artifacts and some selected artworks. Located downtown, check hours for openings.
Great museum and a good choice to educate yourself on one hand in Colombian history but also in Colombian art. The exposure area is very nice and if you don't speak Spanish the informations are also aviable in Spanish.
The building used to be a prison, thus the exterior is very interesting. But, the interior of this museum needs organization. Either arrangement by centuries, townships, or religions. Instead, the collection appears to be arranged haphazardly. After 45 minutes we left!
The National Museo is a must see adventure. Each level of the museum has something new to offer. I would recommend this to all travelers.
Don't miss the excellent National Museum in Bogota. The Museum provides an imaginative mix of history and art, displayed in a manner that makes the history come alive for the visitor.
The museum is laid out extremely well. The lower floors are about the very old history of Colombia and as you go higher up it becomes much more contemporary. There are great technological features that make the history come alive. Projections, audio and even cards in English explaining each of the rooms. Free admission, clean restrooms, a gift shop and cafe. Must see!!
Many types of paintings, drawings and other art forms. There are also archaeological findings on display, very interesting. It took about an hour to walk through.
The area is nice and the building is historical but what was in the building was not that impressive. It is free and glad I went but the other museums in the area are much better.
