We had a delightful afternoon at this Museum and the exhibits are great and well displayed. It's in the heart of Portland, parking in a garage around the corner was easy and very reasonable, and the Museum cafe serves wonderful soup, sandwiches, etc. The cafe also serves as the exhibit for a really good glass and china exhibit. Lots of paintings, Winslow Homers, and colonial furniture, as well as terrific sculpture and a modern art floor. Don't mss it if in the area.
My wife and I toured New England in October to see the fall colors, and passed through Portland, Maine and had the chance to visit the Portland Museum of Art. With focus on the works of New England artists in the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, this museum has an impressive collection which includes works by Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, and Andrew Wyeth. The PMA is Maine's oldest art institution (dating back to 1882), but the current beautiful brick building was built in 1983 and is itself an impressive structure, housing the paintings and sculpture in an easily and comfortably viewed layout.
On a recent Saturday afternoon we had a wonderful experience at the Portland Museum of Art, located right in the heart of downtown Portland, Maine. It is a relatively new building with four floors of spacious galleries. We were attracted to a special exhibit; the Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America. The gallery was extensive and made even more enjoyable by detailed signage providing information on both the artist and the painting itself. There is a well-stocked gift shop including souvenir items as well as reference works for serious enthusiasts. There are also activities and programs for children. The Portland Museum of Art is something Portland can be proud of. I’m sure we will visit it again on future trips to Maine.
Went to PMA with the family. The museum has a nice combination of art by local artists depicting the local region, as well as art by masters such as Renoir, Picasso, Sargent and Monet. There were many sculptures as well as paintings. You can get in for free Friday evenings!
First time ver having visited the museum and it was well worth it. Very nice special exhibit "The Berger Collection, Treasures of British Art 1400 - 2000" from the Denver Museum of Art. We also enjoyed the Winslow Homer exhibit and will come back again soon to take the trip to see his refurbished studio in Prouts Neck.We recommend that anyone visiting the Portland area considering a trip to the Portland Museum of Art!
It is amazing that we have such a great collection of art in Maine! This museum does a great job displaying it, the layout is easy to navigate and the staff are very knowledgeable about the art.
We stumbled upon the museum and it happens to be free Friday's. There were many interesting exibits. Staff was very friendly. A very enjoyable evening
Its got a bit of everything - paintings to photographs, sculpture to glass, old to new. The various exhibits are very interesting - depending on your taste. Really is a must see whether from Maine or away. You can spend quite a bit of time in the museum depending on your stamina. I always enjoy going.
What a nice museum to stop at and look around...It has a little bit of everything, several real gems, and architecturally it's interesting...It's in a nice neighborhood of Portland, too...
What a treasure. It has everything - old and new. It is a real treat to visit for a local or a tourist!
