The courthouse is a majestic giant in the heart of Carthage Missouri's downtown square. There are a few historical displays about the Civil War, but there's not much to see here. It's worth a stop in before dining or shopping on the square.
That the courthouse has any museum is a great plus to me. I think that what is shown is worthy of a traveler's stop. The large mural painted by local painter Lowell Davis, depicts the history of Carthage from its earliest days to modern times; it is accompanied with a very interesting audio presentation. I have driven through Carthage dozens of times and did not know of many (any?) of Carthage's little museums. I think the Courthouse, though small, is a wonderful stop for travelers who enjoy history!
We didn't have too much time, but we looked at all we could in the time we had. It is a definite stop when in Carthage. It shows a great deal about the town and its part in the Civil War.
Historic building that is the centerpiece of the Carthage Square. The county has kept it in excellent condition. If you enjoy history, you'll enjoy a stop here. Young children and teenagers probably won't enjoy it.
The most beautiful local courthouse I have ever seen. Still an operational building, but you can go in and walk around and look at small displays of local history and a wonderful mural.
We went on the suggestion of Ron over at the Boots Motel to see the hand operated 1898 elevator. It is lovely. The operator is also a special guy!
We enjoyed our tour around the courthouse..Quiet, clean and full of history. If you are touring Carthage, you should take the time to visit. Unique paintings.
OK, I really try to stay away from the Courthouse! Not because it's not a neat place to see, which it is absolutely beautiful.... but that's where we go to do business (taxes, fines, etcl). It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the area and should be seen when you're in Carthage.
The courthouse like many in Missouri are old buildings. The stairs between floors is lengthy, however, they do have an elevator. They do have one handicapped entrance. The staff in the offices I needed to conduct business (personal property tax, real estate assessment and treasurer) were friendly and very professional.
Carthage is home to the most beautiful courthouse I have seen in any place I have been. The outside is gorgeous and inside are some displays of local and state history plus an old-fashioned elevator with a real live person to operate it for you. Fun ride to the top floor.
