i visit the National Museum of the USAF at least once a year, usually with a grandson, to get caught up on what is going on. This is truly a national treasure and we in the Southwestern Ohio area are very lucky to have it so close by. It must be seen to believe. The size, scope and the quality of the displays showing the history of manned flight on earth and in space, and the incredible engineering skills and imagination that have gone in to their development cannot be fully appreciated except by seeing the displays for one's self. . . . and now a major expansion is underway to further enhance the museum. And all this is for free!
Very interesting and well done. So much to learn here. We go several times a year. Cafe and gift shop.
This is a 4 star museum if you hated airplanes - and off the chart if you have any interest in aerospace!!! The finest aerospace museum in the world. Makes the Smithsonian look half baked.
Might be a little hard to find, however the Museum was jam packed with history in both the presidential and the experimental hanger. If you are passing through Dayton or into Aviation this is the number 1 place to visit. Worth a day trip to go and see.
If you enjoy airplanes, jets, rockets, and the history of aviation this is the place! Located on the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, this massive complex houses a vast array of aviation artifacts, information, displays, and memorabilia in several attached buildings. Admission is free. A flight simulator and 3D theater charge. You can tour the facility on your own at your own pace. If you have time, I highly recommend the 1:30p tour which greatly supplements the visual displays. The entire history of flight is on display here from the first flying craft to rocket ships. The site is handicap accessible. A gift shop is located near the entrance. A large, clean, full-service cafeteria is located on the second floor. I found the food tasty and reasonably priced portions. Salads, made-to-order burgers, sandwiches, snacks, and drinks are available. The quantity of on-site artifacts is extensive, so you can spend a little time or a lot. Numerous benches are scattered throughout. I enjoyed this visit very much. Some museum exhibits have special times and may not be accessible, so check web site before visit.
We took visitors from out of town to see the museum. He was a Viet Nam Vet and very proud. It was a wonderful experience for him to see his helicopter and vintage items from the era. Many people honored him and thanked him for his service. The entire museum experience was wonderful. It is amazing how many planes are arranged/placed/intertwined!! There is a lot of walking, places to stop and rest, and wheelchairs/scooters if needed. It is such a fantastic learning experience. We were happy to see the Space Shuttle Trainer exhibit, (even though the National Museum of the United States Air Force deserved to get an actual Space Shuttle also). Wonderful Museum!
I was expecting to see a lot of air planes and armed forces items but I was not prepared tor what all I was seeing. There was way too much to see for these old creaky knees of mine. Plan on taking 2 days to see all the bldgs. and displays. It is all mind consuming especially if you served any time in the military you will see something that you came in contact with. The best part it was free......There is also a gift shop.....
