Just went there last week and it was quite special. There is plenty of room for large crowds inside and out for great food and lots of meat. The wine tasting was kind of low key but good. The senior plates was more than I could eat. They do serve it up big in Texas.
Some of the bbq in Austin is here. Try the ribs, great potato salad, sausage & brisket. Wasn't impressed by the burnt end slices. You can order brisket 3 ways lean, moist or burnt edge. Also get the bread....it comes on all plates. We always call in & order to go! Be ready for a wait to dine here!
At 1:00 in the afternoon we waited about a half an hour to be seated. The staff was friendly and helpful in helping us choose what type of food to order. My girlfriend said it best "barbecue is very personal," this place is hugely popular and our teenage son thinks it's the best in the world. My feeling was that it was good but not great.
If you can only make one winery stop, this is it. They feature their own wines as well as wines from other winery's in the area. There is plenty of parking and you can stop by the Salt Lick for some BBQ after you are done.
I didn't realize that the owners of the Salt Lick BBQ also had a vineyard! While their wines are made at nearby wineries, stopping by the Salt Lick Cellars for a wine tasting (they also taste local craft beers) is a great idea! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. Wine flights are reasonably priced. They also have nice travel containers to allow you to bring your wine home, especially if going home means checking a bag on an airplane! Buying a wine by the glass or a bottle to then enjoy with your meal next door at the BBQ is the way to go!
After a few days in Texas, and more than a few really good recommendations, we tried the Salt Lick yesterday; it's a short distance outside Austin. We tried the Beef Rib Plate and the Thurman's Choice (Brisket, Pork Ribs and Sausage). Both plates came with sides of potato salad, cole slaw and beans. Our brisket choice was marbled and did not disappoint. Everything was fresh and homemade, including the dessert - a warm cobbler, half peach and half blackberry, with ice cream. Wow! The food was fabulous - and the experience included a walk through the winery on a beautiful sunny afternoon. This should be a "must-do" if you are in the area.
This place was by far one of the best and most unique bbq and wine cellars that I have ever been to. Their open fire pit bbq was a pleasure for all the senses and it was truly delicious. we got there early for our dinner reservations and spent about a half hour at the wine cellar doing a tasting then enjoying a bottle outside until our table was called. When I go to Houston to see my family, we always make time to go to salt lick. WORTH THE TRIP!!!
Do yourself a favor and stop into the cellar and do a wine tasting while you inevitably wait for hours for a table at Salt Lick. They have knowledgeable and friendly staff and the wine selection is delicious. The wine isn't made on site, but many are many by local wineries using the grapes that are grown on site. Of the three places we visited to taste wine, Salt Lick Cellars had the best wine to offer and gladly poured with a heavy hand. $7 offers you a taste of 5 wines. Do a tasting, grab a glass to go and enjoy!
For (I think $15) we could have unlimited BBQ meat which is cooked on a traditional fire, unlike anything I had ever seen before. It is bring your own beer which is AWESOME because it really saves money. I recommend getting Shiner Bock beer for the true Texan experience. The meat is great quality and the service is great. I love this place.
Best potatoe salad cole slaw and beans and of coarse all the meat was tasty. Great atmosphere. I hope to return soon.
