Views amazing over Villach. Got bus from Villach station, as we couldn't hire a car. Asked several people how to get there, and no-one advised that from bus you need to hike up a steep road for 30 minutes to get to the castle. Bus back to Villach, was another adventure. As it was a Saturday, VERY limited buses run to this area. We walked several km's to finally waited for a bus, that a local was getting back into Villach.
The Eagle/birds show is wonderful, the views from the castle are breathtaking. We didn't eat there but a lot of people were seated outside eating or just having a drink.
You can have a nice view from the castle down to Villach as well as to the Gerlitzen and Ossiacher See. Walking around the castle is for free and the view is nice for panoramic shoots. Parking lots are available directly at the entrance to the castle. For some money you can be part of the Adler Flugschau, which is a show were different birds of prey are presented.
When my family and I whent to Burg Landskron it was truly wonderful... we had the experience of a lifetime! It was really braith-taking to see how you could train a raven to speak!
Interesting morning seeing the eagles fly. its just worth visiting for the view, one can see the Karavanken mountains opposite. Restuarant good quality not over priced. Very interesting was the monkey park near the castle before going up the hill.
It was a beautiful sunny day in Sep and we walked up to the castle. It was a very steep walk up so it is not recommended for those out of shape. At the top you can see all kinds of birds, vultures, eagles etc . They even have a show but we came when they were on their lunch break so we didn't get to see the birds or the show. Suggest checking the times before you go.
If you're in the area, you should definitely visit, especially if you have kids. The monkeys were very funny, the playground really cozy, the restaurant had an excellent view and good food, and generally we loved the landscape up from the castle.
It is worth the effort - at least for the great view of Villach and mountains, lakes,,,There is also a restaurant and spectacuar show (11 eur) with prey birds (eagl, hawk, owl, raven).
