I am not a musician but this was a great place to visit. The museum is very well organized with musical instruments by continent and country and special exhibits. An amazing array of usual and unusual musical instruments. Great learnjng experience. Spent three hours here and could have stayed longer.
This museum is really well organized. It truly gives one an appreciation for how music is a universal language. It is very clever the way the museum is organized with headphones which allows you to hear many examples of the different types of instuments and types of music. It is definitely worth the visit-but do not plan on covering it in 1 day unless you are just walking through.
I have to reiterate the comments of other reviewers. Allow plenty of time to tour this museum. I have been to many others, but this one is very pleasantly different from them. It is well worth the price of admission. When you enter, you are handed a set of headphones that enables you to "hear" the music at the exhibit you are viewing. The exhibits seem to cover every type of music: rock, jazz, blues, classical, hip-hop, ethnic.... etc. We adults had a grand time listening to our favorites and discovering new ones. MIM has an interactive space for children to play different instruments. It interested our children for a good hour or longer. (Nice for us, too. We switched off so one of us could watch the children and one could return to the exhibits.) Cafeteria offered a nice variety of food—tasty, too. You can eat inside or bask in the glorious sun outside. Don't miss it! Don't miss it!
Or maybe you'd prefer to sing, play, strum, pluck or trumpet it from the rooftops. When it comes to Phoenix's unique Musical Instrument Museum, "fabulous" is really the only word that fits. With exhibitions of instruments, artists and genres from across the globe -- and wonderful headphones that let you experience each unique sound or performance as you wander in front of the display -- you get gloriously lost in the diverse sounds of music. One of the most entertaining days I've spent in a very long time.
Everyone should visit here! It is a beautiful building filled with anything and everything related to music over time and around the world. It will take at least two full days to see everything. I am not a musician, and music is not really something I spend a lot of time thinking about or doing....but this museum gave me the greatest appreciation for music...and it's meaning to mankind.I can't stress enough how wonderful the museum is...except to say..." It is worth 3 times the admission cost".
