Lots of teenagers hanging out in the park, doing tight-rope walking, signing, miming... think there must have been something on... and the views are really lovely, especially of the Chateau.
One of the nicest view in Brittany, see the castle and the old medieval city below from the botanical gardens located besides a centuries old church.
These beautiful gardens offer great views of Fougères and the countryside and are an excellent place to read a book or to sit on a bench and relax when the sun is shining.
Arriving in Fougeres, there is free car parking by the castle and it's easy to join the circular town walk which will take you through the old town and up to the public gardens. The gardens are situated in the high part of town and the view of the castle, old town and surrounding countryside is amazing. It is quite a steep walk up through the winding paths of the gardens but there are benches along the way and the view makes the effort worthwhile. Alternatively, you could park in the high part of town and simply walk round the church to the gardens and views. It would be less strenuous but even if you did it this way, make sure you get down to the castle and the characterful old town streets as well.
The gardens occupy a site overlooking the lovely town of Fougeres--fabulous views! Garden lovers will appreciate the colorful and imaginative plantings, and many of the larger trees are identified by their common name in French, plus botanical name. The entire garden is well maintained and a pleasure to stroll around, but the views of the historic town and beyond are the main attraction. As mentioned by another reviewer, there are some steep paths here, but I think wheelchair users could manage the paths by the ramparts which afford the best views. The backdrop at the top of the hill is one side of the Eglise de St. Leonard, so you can easily visit both places.
Beautiful gardens but not really suitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs as there are some steep paths and steps. Lovely views from the top gardens. Well worth a visit.
