Many "hands on" activities for the kids. Wildlife galore and friendly, helpful staff. Spend an hour or the whole day. Go out of your way, if you must. Don't leave the area until you pay this place a visit.
Great spot to see native plants, and animals in Kentucky. Deer, turkeys, owls, eagles, elk, fish, wildcat, snapping turtles, snakes, bees, bears, quail, and more. Nice walking trails, picnic area, and great spot for fishing and feeding the geese. Very educational and a great value since kids are fee and adults are only a few dollars.
This is definitely the best thing Frankfort has to offer. There's tons of animals to look at, and it's always clean and beautiful. This is great for the whole family, and even if you're looking for a great place to hike or fish-- I'd recommend this place!
Great way to fill an afternoon. There are walking trails, good fishing spots, lots of picnic tables with charcoal grills. The animal exhibits were interesting for a small fee. Children love to feed the ducks that are walking around in the open.
I have lived in Frankfort for about 10 years now and I have NEVER been to Salato. It dawned on me to bring my mom because she loves animals and so do I. The education center was pretty awesome, plus the guy at the front desk was super helpful-and not to bad on the eyes either... I wanted to see the Buffalo's and the Bald Eagle. When we came to the Bald Eagle he was sitting there looking away from us and we walked up and he turned and looked right at us and didn't break his stare at all. He wasn't in a cage, from what I saw, so I wonder how can they combat him staying in? Anyway, it was a hot day and the animals were either in the shade cooling off or drinking water on their way to get into the shade. They have a new baby buffalo! He was born May 15! So cute and HUGE! This is a must go to for anyone in Frankfort or passing through!
A fun place to take young children to tour around inside and outside. More than we could explore in two hours and we look forward to coming back.
I really love Salato Wildlife Education Center! The Visitors' Center is open in the Spring, Summer and Fall but the hiking trails are open year round. There are also two large ponds for fisherpeople. I like the trails - there are no bad ones - just depends on how much time you want to spend. None are too strenuous but just enough to feel like you've gotten some exercise. It's a great place to take small children as the trails are well marked and there are no dangerous overhangs or cliffs. The center is full of really interesting stuff for kids and adults alike - and it's not unusual to get to meet a live wild animal or bird up close and personal!
Called the 'Game Farm' by local residents, the Salato Wildlife Center offers a great look at several native animals of Kentucky in the natural habitats. You can see buffalo, elk, deer, turkey, eagles, bears, bobcats, fish, and many more. They often have animals out that you can see and touch, such as snakes, owls, turtles, and other reptiles. Many of the exhibits are interactive and offer a great resource and learning opportunity for children. You can also get a one day fishing license which allows you to fish in one of two lakes on the property. Walking trails cover much of the area and are great places for exercise as well as learning. Admission is affordable and you can get a family pass. Definitely worth the time to take your family out for an afternoon.
Part wildlife experience, part nature hike, part museum, part educational experience, and all fun. It's a great place to learn about and experience Kentucky wildlife, animal and plant.
The grounds are well kept with a variety of wildlife. The displays inside are extensive which would invite loads of questions from the little ones. The map provided is easy to follow and there are lots of laces to seat and enjoy your surroundings. There are several mounted animals to enjoy ion entering the facility. The buffalo are interesting, there was a new baby when I was there, he's surely has grown by now, also an eagle with a wingspan display just outside his habitat. Deer and turkeys were roaming together, a really interesting place.
