The museum was reasonably interesting but we probably only spent about half an hour there. None of the explanations/leaflets were in English, the staff on the day, didn't speak much English and displays are very traditional. However there are a lot of red and black vases and lots of coins.
This museum is wonderfull and unique it has one of the most wonderfull Old coins collection of south italy two wonderfull "are" rich Old vases and one of the unique collection of the greek Temple . People that work inside are very gentle and inside you can live a unique and wonderfull Old greek atmosphere
The collection is rich and priceless, but the organization of museum doesn't worth the showpieces. It is very old styled, and I suppose not interesting for children or people who aren't keen on history. They have all to make a great fascinating museum! And definitely translation needed, all descriptions are in Italian only.
Spending a month in Sicily, we found that many of the archaelogical museums are closed, officially "for renovation", but, I came to believe, more to balance local authorities budgets. Gela's is open, and quite nice and - if you're interested by such things - quite interesting. It's not as big as the one in agrigento, but well worth a visit of you're passing through.
Andrebbe valorizzato.
I've got family from Gela and on a visit to see them with a friend I took a trip here - The museum itself is relatively well stocked with local artifacts from the areas very rich history and ancient Greek heritage, but nothing was really signposted and there was no description in other languages. I speak Italian, but my friend does not (as I imagine many tourists wouldn't) and had no real understanding of the difference between the hundreds of fragments of pottery without that. A section of the museum is outside, some kind of ruined part of the ancient city - but it felt quite overgrown, with no explanation at all of any of the rubbled squares I was stepping around and would have really benefited from a marked pathway and some information signs. Looming on the horizon is a petrochemical plant, which spoils most of the illusion markedly. The staff didn't speak very much English to help my friend, though to their credit the lady on duty did shout us back because we hadn't looked at one of the exhibits (it was tucked away around the back upstairs). It just feels like with a little more effort this place really could be somewhere to come and admire. I really hope that in the future that happens and future tourists get the benefit.
