crowded. crowded. crowded. crowded. crowded. crowded. crowded. crowded. Do not do this trail on a weekend. Do not do this trail in July. Do not do this trail for the fall colors.Go during the off season in bad weather.
Confirming the popularity of this area, I arrived on a Thursday morning in September to a surprisingly active parking area. Not to say it was difficult to find a spot (it wasn't), just surprisingly busy. Those arriving as I was leaving, mid-afternoon, may have had a bit of a wait. The hike up to the lake itself is moderately difficult overall, with some very difficult portions, but would not be insurmountable for most people. If you are having trouble there are plenty of places to take a breather, including a couple sitting areas and about a half-dozen small bridges, along it's roughly one-mile length. These respites will also provide you the perfect opportunity to enjoy the serenity and beauty of Dead Horse Creek, which the trail follows.Hanging Lake itself has a small boardwalk which encompasses about a third of the lake's perimeter. The boardwalk provides ample bench space to just sit back, relax, and take in the natural beauty. After admiring the lake be sure to spend the extra five minutes to climb the rest of the way up to Spouting Rock. Not only is this location beautiful in it's own right, it is also less crowded than the lake. I had this spot entirely to myself for most of my time there. If you enjoy scenery, the outdoors, and/or hiking and you are in the area I would highly recommend checking out Hanging Lake. You will not be disappointed.
One of the most beautiful places on earth. Worth every step of the exhausting trail. A must see and one you'll never forget.
Hanging Lake and the trail were great. We got to the trail head around 9:30 and there were only a couple cars in the parking lot. The trail is 2.4mi roundtrip and there is about 1000ft of elevation gain from the trail head to the lake. This hike was quick and very scenic. The lake was beautiful. We geared up and were on our way within a few minutes. Once we got to the start of the actual trail we put on our microspikes since the trail was snow covered and icy.If you're an out-of-towner or just don't know, this trail gets a lot of snow on it in the winter. That snow gets icy as it melts and refreezes. YakTrax, microspikes, etc. are nearly a necessity. On our way down we passed dozens of people attempting to hike up without traction. Sure it can be done but they seemed to be having quite a bit of trouble as the slipped and fell all over. I have no doubt there have been a number of broken wrists and tail bones as people try to ascend/descend this trail in the winter without some kind of traction. Back in Glenwood Springs I'd be willing to bet some of the outdoor rental companies rent spikes for a couple bucks. If nothing else don't hike this trail in tennis shoes. Put on some boots.
This is a really lovely hike. Beautiful and such a treat once you reach the lake. Be sure to wear proper foot gear. There were several people who didn't know what they were doing and were wearing flip flops, etc. and really struggled/couldn't do the whole walk. One time we went a woman even fell and broke her ankle and the trail had to be closed as emergency crew made their way up to her and back down with a stretcher, etc. In May there was still quite a bit of snow and ice on the trail. Really gorgeous lake and surroundings - bring the camera!
Very cool hike with amazing views at the top. It is only two miles but don't let that fool you, because it is tough! It is two miles straight up so be ready. It is worth the hike though and we will be doing this again!
Hanging Lake emanates beauty. The blue-green travertine on the lake bed glistens in the sun and you can see the fish's eyes the water is so clear. The falls are a sight to behold. Spouting Rock just a few feet down an adjacent trail is a must see if you make the hike to the lake.
A big hike on a beautiful day here in Colorado. I am not sure if going up was harder on my lungs or coming down was harder on my knees. But I got to tell you, I am not complaining! It was a perfect day. After the hike we went for a burger and beer.
It takes about 45 minutes to get up to hanging lake and it is well worth it! A bit of it is steep but has handholds. But for the most part, you must be physically able to do some hiking. Hiking boots and proper attire are highly recommended. I went on a mild day and it was just beautiful.
一开始听说这里的湖水可以媲美九寨沟的湖水。但可能天气没有很好吧,湖水也就一般的蓝,不至于到达说晶莹透明的那种状态。另外没有车上去很麻烦,一定要租到或者借到。
