The Platte is most spectacular during spring and fall migration seasons. Innumerable birds stop at the river to rest and feed before continuing their migration. In early summer, ride down the river in inner tubes. In the summer, walk across a major river because it'll be pretty much dry.
platte river is a dry sand bed now thanks to the drought normally its not very deep in most places its kinda neat to walk across it
I is fun to visit the Platte when the cranes are stopping over, what a spectacular sight!!

Platte River Archway is fabulous history museum with earphones that follow you and describe what you are seeing at that exact moment.
there are places along here, where you can see a lot of sandhills cranes in season. the best time is early fall to mid fall.
Multiple species of water fowl are on the main and smaller channels. The nearby Motel 6 (pet friendly) is right on one of the channels.
Every spring almost 500,000 sandhill cranes come to the 50 mile stretch of the Platte River between Grand Island and Kearney, NE. The stay for a few week to rest, eat, and socialize (make pair bonds) as they prepare for their flight north to Canada, Alaska, or even parts of Siberia. They can be seen in the cornfield in the daytime, or coming in to the river to roost for the evening, or leaving their "beds" on the river in the morning. Viewing platforms are available along bridges near Alda, Gibbon, and at the Ft. Kearny State Recreation Area. It truly is an amazing sight.
The only time it is a major attraction is when the Sandhill Cranes come to the Platte River in the spring, At that time there are visitors from long distance to view the Sandhill Cranes perform their dances.
