Why do wineries serve taste after taste w no palate cleanser in between??? How can we decipher one from the other when they all come in rapid succession? I asked for crackers, server wasn't sure they even had any but she found some...they were great! A young server Emily was very nice, but inserting her own judgments on competitor wines is not appealing " I mean, Pinot Grigio is yuck!" Well. What happens if we like Pinot Grigio vs. the one she is selling?A server next to her appeared nice and knowledgable as well but his shirt was filthy. Not a good impression.Wines were OK, quite expensive though so just bought a glass to drink then. BTW, we were told that it is against the law for us to keep our tasting glasses. Well, for $8 a tasting, more expensive than other locations, we should be able to keep something!!! Room was modern, bright, and clean but very loud w other patrons there. Hard to hear.Let's find a winery that does tastings like professionals, so far, only Prince Michel in Virginia. Will keep trying.
Visited here with friends, one whom is a bona fide wine expert. Weather was nice since we were here mid-November but pre snow. Very nice facility Would recommend it for weddings and family gatherings. The outdoor space was very pleasant and well kept. Wines were good for the most part although I thought, as with many Virginia wineries, that their mid-range wines were a bit overpriced. Nice people were helpful.
This is another beautiful winery nicely situated in the foothills of Virginia. Nice setting, spacious and attractive facility with a wide selection of excellent wines for tasting. We were lucky with the timing and able to chat with our knowledgeable and agreeable host about a range of subjects related to the industry. Highly recommended.
We went on a Thursday afternoon and it was quite quiet but very enjoyable. The tasting room is bright and large and appeared to have adequate room for many people. There is a several outdoor tables with comfortable chairs that overlook the vineyard and a small lake. We bought a nice little cheese plate and sipped our wine outside. The staff was friendly and chatty and the wine was respectable. We brought our 8 month old baby and held her during our tasting and no one batted an eyelash at her cooing/giggling. I would go back.
We go here every year and visit Casey and other staff at this delightful winery. The scenery is just beautiful as you sip well crafted wines. They have a cheese plate to go along with their wine and a lovely veranda to sit and enjoy. Visit! You won't be disappointed.
We're admitted wine snobs. We've been to a lot of wineries in a lot of places and this is without a doubt our home state favorite. Virginia makes some excellent white wines but typically the reds, in our opinion, fall well behind, The exception is Pollak's 2009 reserve Cabernet Savignon, a first rate offering. The recently released 2013 Viognier we tasted will continue their tradition of excellent whites. The tasting room staff knows their product, understands the aspects of wine making and the contribution of the local terrior. The owners have a high standard and it shows in their employees, their vineyard and their wines. The property is lovely and sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine and a cheese plate is a great way to spend an hour or two.
We had a wonderful tasting with Casey who was entertaining and knowledgable! We learned a lot and enjoyed the wine. Brought a picnic and enjoyed sitting outside with a bottle of the cab sauv. Highly recommend!
Yep, these good folks at Pollak made us feel welcome from the moment we stepped in the door. Keith poured eight wines for us and did a fine job discussing the wines, the wine maker's process, and possible pairings. Every wine we tasted was delicious. Then we bought a glass of wine, opened up the lunch we had brought with us, and settled in by the fireplace. As we sat and sipped we watched the tasting room fill and without exception each group was welcomed and nicely accommodated. We purchased several bottles of wine and put a star next to Pollak in our tasting notebook!
Nice setting in the valley next to a nice pond however once you walk into the place it falls apart quickly. We went there the other weekend to sample some wine. The folks behind the bar were overwhelmed by the crowd but that is no excuse to totally ignore nor insult prospective customers. As I was patiently waiting for service another gentleman politely gestured that he needed 2 wine glasses to one of the girls. She rudely responded " I don't do sign language"!!!! The arrogance and stupidity of that woman. My small group gathered our things and left. We will not be back.
We have visited all the wineries in the greater C'Ville area over the years, and there are several that are worth visiting for quality wines and lovely settings, but we are consistently impressed with Pollak for the wine, the atmosphere, and the staff. This is not a group of kids who just pour and read a script. These folks, though young, know the wines. They mix fun and humor with lots of knowledge, and the wines are spectacular and not overpriced. The Cab Franc is always a winner, but the Merlot is the surprise; very rare to get a good Merlot in Virginia. It is wonderful to have a glass, a baguette, and cheese on the patio, overlooking the pond and the hills all around. Great experience, but don't go on a Saturday or Sunday, it's just too, too popular. Special shout out to Casey, who has been pouring there for years and is much beloved by all the regulars.
