We went to isla santay, especially because you could rent bikes. but we had to wait more then one hour to get one. people were walkiing on the ride line so you couldn't really bike. also it is very short and the place itself wasn't authentic for me.
This is one of the nicest activities you can do in Guayaquil and one of the few opportunities to explore the nature around the city. Very advisable to go first thing in the morning, when is not too hot (7 am is perfect) and the bridge (narow) is almost empty and the nature of the island is just awake. You can sport beautiful birds and cocodriles, you can either take a boat to return (but you land in a rather poor part of the city, as a foreigner not recommendable) or complete the 1,5 walk (approx), you can eat in the community restaurant some good local fish.
My visit to the Island Santay was very surprising I had expected an un-finished infrastructure but was surprised to find everything in order personnel was there to assit with my questions the area spotless the walkway although had some small damage it was very nicely constructed. A very nice area for bird watching but not on the weekends to many local visitors and the birds are few but during the week and early in the morning full birds. I enjoyed my visit very much and recommend a visit to Santay. There is and area for food and relaxasation.Note:You will find acuatic birds as well as tropical forrest bird species.
Laudable are efforts of the new government of Ecuador to attract more tourists, but the visit to the park Santay offers nothing interesting. In fact this island in the estuary of Guyas converted into a park, a pond with a few lazy crocodiles. Everything else is subject only to botanists interests.
We enjoyed this fun bike ride, despite the hot day. The bikes were good. Being a Saturday, the route was packed with local families So quite hard avoiding kids and buggies, no bell on bike. Not much wildlife to see...a few butterflies, crabs, pet crocs. Basically a path through the swampy forest on stilts. Great views of Guayaquil from the modern pedestrian bridge, and a welcome breeze!
