We just happened to get off the train just outside of the gates of the Peace Palace! We wanted to see if we could take a tour. Unfortunately there weren't tours the day we were there, but they did offer a free self guided tour with a headset. We took that and learned a great deal about this historic place. If you are in The Hague, be sure to stop by!
This is a remarkable building. Some 15 min walk from the very center. Went there twice, once during day time, once during the night when it looks so mystical.Unfortunately you cannot enter it on a daily basis. There are guided organized tours which occur mainly on weekends, so look ahead for it.In front of the entrance to the right is an eternal flame, with stones from every world country
The beautiful classic Peace Palace is befitting the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Court of Justice located inside the ornate structure. The Peace Palace was a site intended, in part, as symbol of international law. You don't actually 'see' justice served in a visible sense, so the grand structure is symbolic. The palace sits some distance from the gates and the palace is surrounded by a large iron fence and most photo ops are taken in front of the gates. If you know your travel schedule, tours are available for visitors and must be scheduled in advance. Otherwise, an impromptu tour is not possible. The Eternal Peace Flame on the grounds outside the gates is provides another photo op. As a symbol of peace and international law, the Peace Palace hits the mark.
Take a lovely walk from the city centre out to the Peace Palace for a great experience. Make sure you look at the opening hours if you wish to go inside although still a marvelous view and photo opportunity from the outside. Many great displays inside the display area which give a great overview of history from the 1890s, in many languages. Be sure to pay a visit to the peace flame just outside the front gates.
the architecture is stunning, a very special place to tour. The main courtroom is very impressive. We traveled from the USA just to see this place. it was worth it.
The Peace Palace in the Hague, houses the International Justice Courts. Due to its humanitarian work and service provided to various nations, I have been intrigued by the design choices mad, for such kind of an 'international palace' and it has been on my 'to visit list' for a while. The exterior view is bold, not severely imposing, with a mix of various stylistic details, the exterior tower did remind me of Disney world, the style is unlike most Dutch architecture. On my visit to the Peace Palace, this confusion instantly dissolved, when I heard the building was a gift from the Carnegie, the American philanthropists and is therefore not Dutch design. The Garden around the Palace are charming and the best feature of this palace. The elaborate metal lampposts that stand at the entrance reminded me of the East-European church metal works, elaborate and grand. Once you step inside, you are in an interior design history handbook. There are so many different styles and features, sitting next to each other that it becomes overwhelming. The low arches with Byzantium flower capitals for columns, Roman mosaic floors, Victorian stain glass, Rococo plaster designs on ceilings, Persian tiles, arts and crafts patterns, Neo-classicism and more, all in the attached corridors to the working spaces. The spaces themselves, like the session rooms were less vivid, with a lot of wood and stone. There were busts of Gandhi, William Orange and other important people in niches, lit by light filtering in through stain glass windows featuring Goddess Gaia and other mythical beings. This is a building is a people pleaser, they have tried to incorporate so many styles, ornaments and images from different cultures, that it loses its elegance and grandeur. The features by themselves are well crafted, just not well placed, with little thought if the space needs so much of ornamentation, that changes every other bay. This is an example of architecture going wrong in trying to please too many masters, and losing harmony in the process. The feature that I liked most is the side entrance to the Palace, again a mix of materials, but they do work together. There are few architectural building projects which come with a brief so complex as to represent the whole humanity, and such a brief can be quite daunting. The interiors of the Peace Palace in my opinion is an example of a bad solution to the challenging design problem. This is a place that serves humanity and justice everyday, and has all my respect for the work they do, but if you are visiting the Peace Palace as a designer, this place disappoints.
海牙国际法庭需要提前预约 如果没预约是进不到里面的 但有展示厅 有自助讲解设备 提供多种语言 很便利 能够了解他的历史 最重要的是都是免费
Make sure you book (on line or in advance somehow) as this is a very unique place in the world. The architecture is gorgeous as are the stunning pieces donate as gifts by many member countries. The Japanese silk tapestries are world the trip alone. I loved the main court room and it's lovely stained glass windows. I just wish there was a more comprehensive book detailing the art (there are big books that are huge without large colour panels of the works, or a small pamphlet-like book that is spare on detail...) I think its a must see for anyone interested in world peace..
