one thing is fact, you have the see this caves. This is incredible! the glowworms or whatever they are at the end are like stars in the sky. Thousands and thousands. I chose the classic tour with the tubing. Definitely much better than a normal walk through the caves. But sometimes it was still a bit boring. Well, could be just in my opinion. I'm used to have big adventures. But I can imagine that the other tours with abseiling and climbing is probably a bit better. But I didn't this tour. Anyway, I can recommend this tour because you will never find a place like this at an another place of earth. So 4 of 5 points. Because I just think the guys can improve it a tiny bit. :)
My partner and I have lived here all our lives and never took the time to enjoy how beautiful our country really is. The Waitomo glowworm cave was an experience we shall never forget. We enjoyed our guide (Alfie - my apologies for the spelling) sharing the history of the cave-her knowledge shone thru as well as her humour. We were lost in our own wonderful thoughts while Alfie manoeuvred our boat around the cave. Thank you.I would like to mention to a tourist (you know who you are) - it is considered rude and even offensive to make a negative comment when a guide is sharing a little history about the caves. Something to consider when you are next visiting our country.
This is the big attraction in Waitomo. It's very interesting and the boat ride in the silent darkness looking at the glow worms is very cool. Our guide Mark was very professional. Very touristy though and just lacks the X factor. We did the Black Labyrinth Tour earlier in the day which we enjoyed much more.
You need to be alright with tight spaces and be able to put aside the fact that you are going to be 18 stories under ground....if you can let go of that, which the guides easily allow you to. THIS IS AMAZING! We did the long tour and it was just long enough, plus you climb 2 waterfalls to get back out!! After to repel and bounce like 007 into the cave, what an entrance! Great guides, great experience! Nothing like it!
Amazing experience for me and it will also be a amazing experience for other people especially foreign people that have not seen a glow worm visit soon
It is a marvelous cave, our guide was entertaining and great, the boat tour is just impressive - however no photos are allowed which is really sad and lowered my experience significantly. There could have been so many awesome shots! I know it is part of their business however 49 $ is already not cheap and you would expect a bit more value for money.
This cave tour was just average and it was difficult to hear the guide when they talked about the formations, and they used a flashlight instead of a laser pointer to show us the formations, so the area was pointed out gernerally. However, once you got to the boat ride, and saw the wonders of the glow worms first hand, it more than made up for the rest of the routine. They even did a photo on a green screen at the begining. Just a bit too comercial for me. However when you stop at the I-spot just before the cave, take time to visit the museum and learn abou the caves, the area and the glow worms first, it really enhanced our visit. Also ask them about a couple of hikes in the area, well worth the time to see the area.
The caves are OK, then we were herded into a small boat to "traverse" the glow worm cave which entailed about 50 feet of water- so they just pushed the boat back and forth for a while. definitely no worth the money or time.
