Cold weather and snow only add to the majestic colors of this thermal. Colors are vibrant, but not as plentiful in winter. Our guide explained that the colors are produced by the micro organisms leaving in the hot springs. They are more plentiful during spring and summer when the colors are even more brilliant. You are also limited in the winter to pretty much stay on the boardwalks because of the accumulated snowfall.Absolutely worth the visit and the eire fell that can be created as the warm, moist water meets the cold air.
The Grand Prismatic Spring is one of many stops along the way in Yellowstone. Don't miss it. It is a walk from the parking lot and the crowds can be pushy, especially tourist buses from other countries. Don't be dissuaded, take your time and be cautious. Moving slowly is the best bet. All of that said, this is a magnificent, huge spring with a rainbow of colors that is truly an awe-inspiring site.
What is really great about this spring is all the colors. It is blue, green orange & yellow. They told us that it is because of the micro organisms that live in the hot water here that makes the colors. Very cool!
It rendered me speechless when we put our on this natural wonder!!! One of earths natural art pieces!
I think its GORGEOUS but we went in late summer and I felt sick it was so hot. I was the only one in my group to walk. So go late evening or early morning to the heat won't get ya.
For whatever reason you don't always hear as much talk about Grand Prismatic Spring as you do for some of Yellowstone's other features. Grand Prismatic is a must though! We parked at the next parking lot up (towards ole faithful) from the "official" springs parking lot and set out on a short trek to see the spring from above. It's a fairly easy hike but as some of the other reviews said, when you get to the hill it is very steep and I would recommend a walking stick and to take it slow if you're not used to climbing steep, rocky terrain. When you get to the top though the views are incredible! You can see the whole spring in all of its glory and all of its exceptional colors. We went in the evening and were rewarded with a stellar sunset and a lack of people. You can also hike further back on the top and get some really cool views of other parts of the valley. Would consider it a must in Yellowstone.
they say the best view is aerial, but it is still beautiful with all the colors to see by walking up on the side. Ironically this is better to visit in summer than winter, because the steam is so thick in winter it is hard to see the bright blue water.
This was amazing to see, hear & feel. A must see in Yellowstone National Park. The pictures do not do it justice. It's a bit of a walk to get to but well worth it.
