This area is very gray. The mud volcanos contrast sharply to the more colourful geyser areas in Yellowstone, no bright green, yellows and blues here. We took some nice photos so we have a memory of our visit
Do the whole circle because there's so much to see. Sour Lake is certainly inviting, but you may want to resist. The water has the acidity of battery acid. This is just....remarkable. There's a whole area of dead trees because at the last earthquake, the ground turned to 200 degrees F. Why? No one knows. It's astounding to see this stuff and not just hear about it.
Saw herds of bison 25 feet from us. Great wildlife up close. Gives you a false sense of security as if they are tame. Be very observant.
Great quick stop and short hike up and around the geysers, steam vents and mud pots. Dragon's Mouth.
Walk the boardwalks of the Mud Volcano area and enjoy the unique thermal features. This area is very different from the geyser area on the west side of the park, and the sulfur smell is much stronger, but it's worth at least a short visit. Mud Volcano area lies between Lake and Canyon villages near Hayden Valley on the eastern side of Yellowstone Park.
It was interesting to see boiling mud. Something different. It was also cool to "hear" the sounds the Dragon made. It was one of the most memorable noises from out trip to YSNP. It didn't take too long to get out and see the highlights of the stop. It was worth stopping.
Walked the boardwalks all around and were wowed by the gurgling mud pots, super heated lake, and especially the Dragon's Breath growing and steaming at us. Not to be missed and an easy walk. Check out the Cascade Rapids quite near...beauty and peaceful which can be hard to find in Yellowstone.
