Going to khunjrab pad via kkh is a challenge. The atahbad Lake has submerged the road and the road link between hunza and khunjrab had been disconnected. The only option is to cross the lake via boat. There are private boats charging usually $2 for a one way trip. If you are desirous of taking your car across the lake it can cost as high as $200. Best is to have and advance reservation on boat if you want your car across. This way toy can save half the amount. Wear warm clothes. Travel between May to September only
Just getting to Khunjerab pass is a noteworthy feat. From Pakistan it is an epic adventure of third-world travel. From China is a more assured journey but still something not many undertake. It is a long, lonely drive along a finger of the Karakoram Highway, best staged from the Tajik-Chinese town of Tashkurgan. The drive south requires Chinese Army permits and passes borders of Kazakhstan, Tajikstan and Afghanistan, through nearly empty land with only the occasional goat herd, yurt, or Chinese mining camp. Winding up a long canyon to altitudes around 5,000 meters, you arrive at a low saddle where Chinese and Pakistani military posts face each other a couple hundred meters apart, and you are allowed to walk around in no-man's land and even take a few pictures. There was no commercial traffic when I was there, and you can kind of sense the tension of two countries who would like to have healthy trade, but are hamstrung by immigration, religious and political differences.
187Km drive from Gilgit to Sost is an comfortable Task with fully carpeted Karakorum Highway(KKH) a good example of Pak-China friendship. Hunza the valley of Peaks would welcome you with comfort and culture however you can directly move onto AttAabad Lake emerged in year 2010 which took 20km of KKH in deep cold water. SOST is the last town in Pakistan with Pakistan Tourism development Corporation (PTDC) Motels with all the facilities available. SOST has the lmmigration center for China where you find traders and travelers to Khunjurab or Tashkurgan(China). you can buy 1$ ticket to Visit Khunjurab National Park or a Bus early at 0900hrs leaving for china. Have fun, no worries, its a peaceful fascinating place to visit. and same is the case if you are travelling from Tashkurgan(China) to Khunjurab.
Its the highest overland pass. So its quite the experience. I loved travelling through china to get here and drive downhill towards the Kashmir side of Pakistan. My trip was in 2009. The Karakoram Highway downhill towards Pakistan from the China border was under construction so was very bumpy and dusty. However its an epic experience to be able to travel the old historic Silk Route is indescribable. Also visiting Kashgar and heading to Tashkorgan on bus was awesome. I loved seeing the Tajik people and seeing their culture and life. Maybe the road is not better. But must travel I say. Very sensitive issues with immigration over this border between these two countries so extreme research and must have visas on hand when you trave.
This is a interenational boarder pass between Pakistan and China in the Karakurom Mountain area,1or 2hours you will go through it if you have properly certificates. boarder check is not interestiog, but the mountain view and time difference between the two countries worth to mentioned.
