One of the main places to visit in Corfu-Town. Don't hesitate to go and visit this fortress. It's very well preserved. You have some public institutions housed in the buildings of the fortress, like the public library, music school. You can see even some canons in very good condition, and also some bombards. In summer there is a visiting fee, about 4 euros.
Nice interesting and historic place to visit during a trip to Corfu Town. Provides an excellent break for those husbands and boyfriends that may have had enough of being walked around all the shops!
The was a lovely place to visit. The views across corfu town are fantastic and the view out across the sea is breathtaking. Be prepared for the walk if you want to climb to the top, especially in the heat.
After spending a large part of the day walking around Corfu we went to the Old Fort which is a good vantage point for looking over the town and beautifull views over the harbour/ocean. Take the bridge over the moat to the entry then it is really a good climb to the top, no good if you have problems walking. Some interesting places to see on the way up , one of them the lovely church building that was constructed during the English time here. When you get to the top the water views are terrific, great for photos. The fort was built in the sixth century and has seen many different rulers and is World Heritage Listed, very interesting place worth the visit and to understand some of it's history.
Good look at History .great views and a lot of nooks and crannies to look in .After walking up there is a cafe to have a drink
The old fortress was fairly boring as I thought there would be a bit more history available about . There wasn't really much to see at all. Very disappointed :(
Spent a wonderful 4 hours exploring the Old Fortress with its fabulous view and areas of interest. Well worth a visit but allow plenty of time to wander and explore.
We visited Corfu with friends and I absolutely fell in love with the island!!! The castle is the first thing you see when you come in to the island by boat and it's very majestic. We also went and visited and it's beautiful. Very scinic and gorgeous!
My wife and I explored Corfu while on the MSC cruise, the fortress was good to see and we took some nice photo's.
The Old Fort is a "must visit" place and worth putting aside a morning to see it all . A very exposed place so can get very warm in the middle of the day . There is an interesting museum and also a gallery with exhibitions which change from time to time. St Georges Chapel is on the South side where there are open air concerts and views over Garitsa Bay . The highlight of the visit has to be the climb to the top (lighthouse) , good steps all the way with plenty of hand rails to assist. The view from there is stunning with the whole of Corfu Town underneath and the Ionian Sea across to the mainland on the other side . A panoramic view of the whole of the area .
