If you do not like aspen trees by the million that are in full fall color in the canyons and on the mountainsides of the beautiful Colorado Rockies then you need to go to the desert. The drive over Kebler Pass is far and away the most beautiful drive I have been on. The road is unpaved most of the way but is maintained in excellent condition. Any vehicle can be used and four wheel drive is NOT needed.
We drive over Kebler Pass whenever we're in the area, family lived in Crested Butte, now over in Delta County. This year, we drove over the last week in September, aspens were peaking & absolutely stunning. We even got snowed on which was fun & extra beautiful! The spruce trees were wonderful with a blanket of snow. The pass closes in winter, but the rest of the year, check it out.......there are camping areas up there, too!
My most favorite place on Earth!.....This time we went snowmobiling on Kebler Pass and it was beautiful to see the Sun shine on the Aspen and Pine trees, the snow and the Mountains!
We drove through Kebler Pass in October 2014. The leaves on the west side were peaking and were spectacular! Any other time of year I would have rated it 3-stars. The road is mostly graded gravel with some asphalt sections. Assuming good weather, the type of car you have is a non-factor.
Definitely worth the drive if you take the time. the color was spectacular and the mountains were pretty nice too. Looked like there were lots of recreational opportunities off the road if you allowed the time.
We have been twice and it is well worth the drive for the views and wildlife. Make sure it is open during snow months. We look forward to seeing more of the trails once we know the area better. You have to see the mountain waterfalls with snow with your eyes because the phone or camera do not do it justice.
The road is dirt and gravel but easily driven by any car unless it has rained a lot. We were treated to Aspen trees in full color. Every turnout provided another view of the changing colors.
Gorgeous. Dirt road but spectacular views. Some narrow spots and some drops but I'm scared of heights and it was still worth a few minutes of sweaty palms
Awesome drive with views of the largest aspen grove in the world--wonderful views of fall aspen--drive is not paved, but 4WD is not needed.
Caught the end of the aspen turning. Well worth the drive. Road was a little (ok a lot) bumpy but passable without 4wd.
