An elevator can bring immobile people to the groundfloor of this building, but elas not to the outer Gallery, which is a pitty. In order to avoid a far as well as very steep climb one can hop on a tiny train which will bring you for a fee all the way up the mountain (starts at the dock of the cruiseships to monastery Weltenburg as well as near the tourism office). “Möchten die teutschen nie vergessen was den befreiungskampf nothwendig machte und wodurch sie gesiegt” (May the Germans never forget what made the Liberation War necessary and and by what means they won). King Ludwig I had the monumental construction errected in 1813-1815 in order to commemorate the liberation of Napoleonic wars (architect Leo von Klenze). What originally should have become a Romanesque "Kapellenhaus" was eventually decided on a Greek-Roman rotunda with 18 buttresses, the number 18 had to be taken into account from highest request, number 18 in memory of October 18: D-day in battle of Leipzig. Therefore there are 18 corner stairs, 18 candlesticks, 18 buttresses with 18 provinces, 18 x 3 columns in the Gallery, 18 war masks, 18 niches, 18 Commander-panels held by 2 victory goddesses, 18 names of fortresses, 18 x 2 double pillars in the Gallery, 7 rows of 18 x 2 commanders on the vault and 18 crosses and stars in the mosaic floor. Foundations had to be re-strengthened, and hardly the construction commenced when a very serious interruption occured: due to the (forced) acbdication of King Ludwig in 1848 constructionworrks were at the michelsberg put on hold, the rotunda faced threat of becoming a ruin, so Ludwig begged his son Otto von Wittelsbach (King of Greece) to come to the resque. Renewed negotiations ensured construction works could be continued that same year. Some figures concerning construction of the rotunda: 2,500,000 million bricks, 1,000,000 million cubic feet hewn stones (25,000 m³), together mounting a cost of 3,000,000 Gulden (3 million), which roughly corresponded with five million Mark. The outer Gallery offers a magnificent panorama over Kelheim and surroundings.
The outside was shrouded in scaffolding during our visit, but this no way detracted from the enormity of it.The entrance itself is quite magnificent and being high on a hill also offers views all around and along the river. The interior is magnificent and simplistic at the same time, with marble mosaic and the ring of marble angels representing each of the German states at the time of Ludwig I.(Dr. Who fans will appreciate the irony of the layout)There is a gift shop and restaurant on site where we had a very reasonably priced lunch.
Imposante Halle. Sehenswert
A great insight into Germany's sacrifice in it's battles of the 30 years war. I walked/hiked to the site from the city and it was a nice walk on a pretty trail.
Storslått ligger det i høyden over byen.
After driving up the very narrow and winding road, and parking in the cool shade of the forest, the walk to the hall was nice. Wit absolutely brilliant views of the Alt Mühltal and the Danube.
