Really lovely and unspoilt, home of a volcano, about 1 hour ferry transfer from Kardamena in Kos. Walk into the centre of Mandraki the main part and take the left turn this will take you to some taverns, take the right path this is will take you to the seafront tavernas, best to have a guided tour to get the best out of your visit, we travelled with V Tours
Wow!! This was an amazing trip we organised through the tour operator, the coach picked us up from the hotel and took us to our boat destined for the island of Nissyros to visit an active volcano and go into its crater. The guide was very informative and took us to the village of first for a wander either up to a castle or left us at our own pace to explore. Stopped and had a bite to eat in a quaint taverna by the sea and met up at the harbour for the bus into the crater. Once we got there we were amazed by the lunar landscape, steam rising out of white, yellow, green and red rock and then what was like a mud bath, bubbles from the heat. You can feel the heat through your feet and are advised to wear thick soled shoes and no flip flops or sandles. The smell of sulphur is strong too and the lack of air means people with asthma etc are advised not to go into the inner crater. It was one amazing experience and well worth the money. Would definitely return!!
Wow what a great experience visit in Nissyros, it is a must see very much enjoyed the visit. It is a beautiful island and active volcano offered a unique experience, you can walk close to it and you can even see water bubble under your feet in the open holes. I would recommend a visit when staying in Kos.
Nissyros is an island that can only be reached by boat. Fortunately there are frequent excursions from various places in Kos. Although it's a sleepy quiet place that tourism has largely passed by, it still has attractions worth seeing - a castle, a monastery and you can walk in the crater of a dormant volcano surrounded by stunning scenery. Well worth a visit.
We berthed our yacht at Nissyros and saw the chance to hire some motorbikes for the spectacular ride up to the crater of the volcano. This has it all . Sulphur fumes, hot springs and gushing jets of hot water, pumice stone and amazing colours of brown, yellow and ochre. It really is quite edgy and threatens to erupt at any moment. On the ride back to the harbour we stopped off at the charming village of Emborios on the edge of the crater. The taverna Apyria spills out into the platia by the church and the food is good quality and reasonably priced. Explore this charming village which was once abandoned but is now being rehabilitated by Athenian weekenders and has many alleys and little nooks and crannies.
This small island is really stunning! We were there through an organized trip coming from Kos; the island has stunning views, an old (and still active) volcano to visit and a beautiful small village which can be visited by foot in less than 2 hours; plenty of small shops to buy any souvenir you can imagine.
We took a day trip from Kos to Nissyros and it was a fantastic trip! Nisyrros has retained its traditional architecture and doesn't cater to mass tourism. It has small traditional towns with narrow streets decorated with colored pebbles depicting various images. It is also home to one of the still active volcanoes of Greece. You can walk on the caldera and see steam and hot spots. Impressive for children and adults. There are some great traditional food and drinks. The beaches are rugged since it is a volcanic island. I would highly recommend visiting to get a feel of traditional settlements.
Just back from a day trip here. Booked with Tigiki travel amd I must say it was amazing value for money. Our tour guide was switched to a lovely man named nick and what a great source of information he was. He lives on nissyros and has vast amounts of loval knowledge. Ellen the other tour guide was very friendly and welcoming. We started the day with the ferry to nissyros and then a trip up to the volcano. We stood on the crater watching steam escape. An amazingly experience and in my opinion much more what you expect a volcano to be than I found mount vesuvius to be.After this we had a wee daunder round the main village of mandiki and stopped for lunch. An excellent day out
The weather was poor when i visited but i still had a fantastic day out. Booked a guided tour of Nissyros and travelled by coach and ferry for 28 euros plus a 2 euro charge for going through the gates to get down to the volcanos centre. Would recommend a visit, the island is beautiful and not far from kos.
This little island was so beautiful and typically greek. It seemed unspoiled despite the amount of tourists visiting mainly for the volcano. It is worth a visit even if the volcano is of no interest to you! The tiny twisty streets are like a maze and it Is so picturesque the whItewashed houses with pots of herbs growing outside are so pretty and shops selling local Produce were a great find! The volcanic ash face mask I purchased hasn't worked any miracles yet but it was worth a try!!!
