Stop by Plaka Forest to enjoy these magnificent birds.Scattered around the place, impressive peacocks gather around to greet you and embrace you with a lovely relaxing vibe. Do not hesitate in bringing some bread or cookies to feed them, they seem to appreciate it!
Peacocks and Cats living in harmony! The cats are ferrel, but very friendly. The Peacocks are constantly displaying their tails. Take Cheese! Both the Cats and Peacocks LOVE cheese. Also the cats like buttered slices of bread!
I went there and enjoyed the non beach part of it. The locals BBQ here. Quite popular. Worth a look.
what a shame this forest is neglected by the authorities , its a lovely place to see , there are plenty of peacocks displaying their beautiful plumage also picnic areas , however they don,t advertise it enough and tend to neglect it , it appears people have dumped kittens ? so as they grow and roam they make a play for the birds , pity someone does not think of sorting it out and perhaps sell the food down there to make money for its upkeep and keep it a more popular tourist ATTRACTION !
Plaka is a tranquil retreat from the main, touristy areas of the island as well as a rest from the relentless summer heat of Kos. The sunken forest is absolutely beautiful with massive pine trees providing shade and rest from the sun. Peacocks are free to roam do so all around the forest. The sounds of the peacocks calling just fill the forest as well adding to the beauty of the location. For me, this is one of my favourite if not my absolute favourite places on the island. It is so relaxing and is just enjoyable on the most simple level. This was my fifth visit to the sunken forest - I cannot leave the island without seeing it. It truly is stunning and is not to be missed.
This place is an amazing find. We approached from the brilliant sun through a strange clearing surrounded by rocks perfect for a James Bond car chase then suddenly we were in a shady forest with the eerie sound of peacocks calling and we were met by strutting peacocks, pea hens with babies following and many many cats. The cats were stretched out on benches and tree stumps and if a peacock jumped up to join them the cats wouldnt even open an eye. They exist happily together and if Snow White had appeared or Cinderella with blue birds and squirrels I wouldent have been surprised.Take the children and have a picnic out of the sun lots of space to run and be safe.
Plaka forest is magical hidden pine forest . In the middle of the place is a " sanctuary" for peacocks. There are over 50 of these beautiful birds , but they are always hungry , and will chase and surround you looking for food. Always take a large loaf or two ! There are also many feral cats that live there. In the winter there are many types of fungus and mushrooms growing there.Do Not eat any unless you are 100% sure of identification , there are some highly toxic varieties .Please do not take any feathers unless they are just lying around.
Amazing to see so many peacocks living wild, and cats ! we took bread for the peacocks but they preferred the ham we had for the cats !
Stunning little place with Cats, Turtles & Peacocks. Definitely worth a visit to see these animals. Took the quad bikes here! Good place to stop at whilst touring the island. To find it... It's west of the airport off the main road. There is a sign and a turning for Plaka and it's just down there. Keep going until you get to the car park.
When you are fed up with the beach and hussle and bussle of the resorts try Plaka Forest, this is a beautiful, quiet refuge where the air is clean and it is very cool, nice sometimes to get away from the sun. There are many peacocks here and each year the population grows, on our first visit some fifteen years ago there were only about a dozen or so, now that figure is nearer to fourty or fifty. There are also a lot of ferrel cats, they are quite harmless, except when people feed them, but they generally look fairly clean. At weekends and on public holidays the forest is full of local people who come down for a BBQ or just a picnic and it can be a very noisy place, but just go with the flow and join in.Beware, the track to the forest is very rough in places so be careful particularly if you have a scooter etc.
