I am in West Bend, WI for 1 week. The closest place to go skiing and go tubing in this vicinity is Little Switzerland and Sunburst. I went tubing there last Saturday, and it was great. It was not at all crowded, and the the snow was like powder on the slopes. Will definitely go there again!
To be more than kind, my most recent experience under the new ownership, was disappointing. I've been skiing at Sunburst since it was little more than a tow rope and a T-bar. I've never seen conditions so awful. Furthermore, what the area is calling a Ski Patrol does not instill confidence. So sad to see what was such a nice place to ski and socialize become such a wasteland.
We went tubing the Monday after Christmas with another family. The kids were aged 9-15. Everyone had a great time. It was not busy when we went just before lunch. There was no snow in southern Wisconsin which may have kept customers away. The ski and tubing runs had snow. The first set of tubing runs was open and they were actively making snow for the other runs. The runs were average speed this time and they allowed up to 5 riders to run at the same time. Employees at the end of the runs were doing a decent job watching out for collisions.
My child was injured while snowboarding. While I thought it was a random accident, I later found out that another 7 kids had broke bones the same week my son was at the facility.I called the management with the intent to let them know about my son's injury because a report was never filed. The report wasn't filed because the ski patrol was focused on the other injured child who was crying. The ski patrol actually asked my son to carry the other injured child's skis down, while carrying his snowboard, all with what was later discovered to be a broken collarbone. The owner of the company Rob Friedo, was unconcerned, aggressive in his tone, and the was only concerned about defending the facility. I truly was calling just to alert them that another child was injured and maybe there was something not right on the hill. Our conversation ended with me saying we will not return to their property and him saying fine and hanging up on me. What a shame.
This was our 2nd visit to the tubing area of Sunburst, and we had another fun fun fun time!!! The staff in front is friendly and organized, and there was no wait time. There is a moving track to move us up the mountain, and then about 8 to 12 runs to choose from varying in speed but all equally fun! The only downside is that last year the boys on top and at the bottom were more helpful with your tubes where they would help you get out, push you down, etc. This time, none of this occurred. =( However, we had plenty of room on top to stand and wait for your chosen track, there were more boys on top to let us know when to go down, and they did inform us of the fastest and slowest runs. Unfortunately, there were a few accidents that day at the bottom where people weren't looking and got awfully hurt. There was not enough staff at the bottom to move the tubers along, perhaps they should all be equipped with walkie talkies to be in touch with the top of the hill boys before they let the tubers to go down. Bottom line, this a great mountain for tubing, no wait usually and good prices. Just keep your eyes OPEN and use good judgement.
First time here - with my husband and daughters ( 11 and 13). We all had a blast tubing! Staff was friendly enough. We met the owners, who could not have been nicer. We live outside of Chicago, but travel frequently to Wisconsin and plan to come back to try the skiing.
This place is full of rude and unhelpful people. Since the new ownership everything has gone in the gutter ( to say it nicely). The ski patrol are the worst and honestly are an embarrassment to the national ski patrol. You have one option with them...either take an ambulance to a hospital or they do nothing for you. I witnessed a young girl get injured and no ski patrol were around to help. I have been skiing Sunburst since I was 3 and used to enjoy this place. The new owners will do anything to save a quick buck.
My kids both 10 went to Sunburst on a school trip this last Friday. My daughter had never skied and decided to try it so signed up with lessons. The instructors were great. They stayed with her the entire 3 hours we were there. I would check on her regularly and the instructors could always be seen working with students - not only my child but others as well as adults. They may not be the biggest hills etc, I am not familiar with skiing, but I can say she didn't want to leave. She loved it. I stayed in the lodge, wish they had better food than cafeteria style, the kids like it. Upstairs bar area small but warm with or without the DRINKS!!! We will definitely be going back on our own and we all plan on taking lessons....
FYI. Sunburst is not affiliated with the national ski patrol. I was told they only have basic first aid training. Way below the standards of the National Ski Patrol.
I went to Sunburst with a group from Cannonball Productions from Chicago on Jan 31st. The whole trip was really good fun.I have skied before but I felt I needed a refresher so I signed up for the Zone lessons along with several of my friends. I found that I progressed through all 4 zones easily inside an hour and got out on the slopes myself after that - exactly as they said I would! The equipment was comfortable and there seemed to be plenty of instructors and ski people around on the slopes. The 'Zone lessons' are a very good idea and EXTREMELY affordable ($10!). One of my friends ended up with a virtually private lessons because there weren't too many other people needing lessons and it was her first time on skis.I had never been Tubing before and I thought that was great fun! I enjoyed the moving carpet lift thing.I thought the runs on the hill could have been labelled better - I didn't see a big area map anywhere around, and after I had gone down a couple of the runs I just stuck to those ones because I didn't want to find myself on a black diamond run by mistake! The only other slight negative was that choosing the ski/snowboard boots was a self-directed activity which was very confusing and not very reassuring for the couple of newbies in our group. I think a few more helpers in the boot-fitting area would have contributed to a more positive first impression. A change machine for the lockers would be a helpful addition too!All in all I liked Sunburst very much and thought it was a good spot for the beginner or intermediate skier/boarder.
