The area is a good location to take photos of the colonial architecture. The plaza itself has the ubiquitous statue of some past official and lots of pigeons...they say it is good luck to be pooped on by a bird ... The palace nearby is interesting with ornamentally uniformed guards (worth a photo) and the parliament building and cathedral are also beautifully kept. Other buildings are In various degrees of decay and age. Although not religious the churches here (there is another a couple of blocks away) are always good for people watching. We were there on a day when lots of confirmations were being conducted, this made for lots of smiles, confetti and flower petals. Worth the walk and it is free.
This is a huge square in the middle of town. Very busy with locals it is not that special. There are some nice buildings around worth a visit.
Yes, it is the main square in the city but there are more impressive ones around. The clock is a bit disarming if you're unaware that it was changed. The buildings surrounding the square are great, the pigeons however are not!
A movie was being filmed on plaza. presidential palace with palace guards, good photos of indigenous people, great snack shop adjacent to plaza. Try the meat pies.
Also know as Kilometer "0" with a huge history to learn if you want to kwon a little of La Paz Citys history, i recomend to get a touristic tour managed by touristic guides. however (As I live here in La Paz City) I just would recomend you to visit this popolar square to kwon why I called it The Pigeons Square XD "Be carefull while feeding pigeons" XD...once you get to La Paz you just have to ask for it, then you can choose to go there by walking or by car, the aquare is in the center place of the city sorrounded by governamental palaces (sorry i dont like politic so i forgot the name of the building aroud XD) (09/11/14)
Well, you´re in La Paz so sooner or later you´ll have to go there, but I didn´t find it so amazing...the buildings around the square are not that interesting and it´s not really the heart of La Paz (that´s San Francisco´s square for sure)
If you are looking for the old centre of town, this is it. The square and the area around it is great to spend some time wandering in.
We went through the museum and original home of Murillo. This was a rally interesting museum and a very telling story within his home.
Nice to see and visit. You have the presidential palace, congress and the cathedral facing the plaza. We were there just after New Years and Christmas decorations were still up. Walking there is nice but be sure you've had a chance to acclimatize first.
It is ask for more oxygen in this beautiful city around mountains exceeding 4000 m. Note that the tourist area is going to the Murillo plaza, friendly local people that gives you choose pleasant tourist destinations. Choose to travel to the salt flats of Uyuni.
