Li Family Mountain (Lijiashan) is small village on the side of hill alongside the Yellow River in Shanxi Province. The closest town is Qikou. The village is one of the better preserved examples of traditional cave houses that are built into the hillsides (called yaodong in Mandarin)). This place is getting ready to explode, not with the foreign crowd but with the domestic audience. A new five-star resort has just broken ground and a new highway is inching its way toward this out-of-the-way location. You will stay in a genuine cave house and the owners will cook for you, all included in the room price. But get here quick, before it's overrun.
I guess this is the translated the name of Lijianshan. Cave houses, some 40 people leave there still and rent their places, for some 7 EUR per person, breakfast, lunch and dinner included. There is several houses that does this, so just ask. I would recommend the one entering from the parking lot, to the left, its a huge house with a courtyard and a lovely family, food was ok and the shower was one of the best I had in China.Well, we all agree that this place is special, so China will probably inject some million dollars anytime soon. Its in Lonely Planet but still is not that crowded with packs of backpackers. Some local daytrippers only. Please make yourself a favour and stay there for a day, even leave some time and stay 2 nights, there is not much to see but the place is peaceful or at least that was my experience.
