The New Jersey Choral Society from Ridgewood, NJ, USA sang a concert here in July and it was magnificent. The Priest and staff were just wonderful to us. Wonderful location in a lovely, charming city. They love classical music.nt
This is the "other" great Gothic cathedral in Rouen. Monet did not paint 30-plus versions of it, but it is definitely worth a visit. It is mere steps away from the large cathedral. The exterior is almost like a wedding cake. The interior is pretty plain, thanks primarily to the Religious Wars and especially the Reformation; the latter stripped the interior bare. Then, there was the Allied bombing during World War II. It was built during a period that the Black Plague swept through Europe and, contrasted with that horror, its delicate, clearly Romantic brilliance, stands in stark and splendid contrast to a horrible time.
It's a different scale than the cathedral but it's on the Rick Steves walking tour of Rouen so don't miss the beautiful little old church.
St. Maclou's is only open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, and my wife and I were only in Rouen for Tuesday to Thursday during a recent visit. Nevertheless, we were impressed by its white flamboyant Gothic exterior. It is a shame, though, that so many of the figures have been beheaded, probably by French Republicans after the Revolution.
Loved both the outside and the inside of this beautiful church - so much detail. Also look up and notice those windows which are the original windows and those which were replaced after the war - you will see the big difference!
Having seen the exterior of St. Maclou’s I now know what they mean by the “flamboyant” style of late Gothic architecture that emerged as the Renaissance began to take hold. Wow! This stunningly beautiful building has so much intricate detail on its façade that it makes you wonder how they ever found the time and money to build it. Well worth a visit. Our tour group was on a tight schedule when we arrived here, and we wouldn’t have been able to go inside even it was open at that time (which I suspect it wasn’t). I’d like to return some time and have a look at the interior.Photographers alert: There are some very photogenic old corbelled and half-timbered buildings adjacent to the church.
Another nice old church with a ton of history and art. The stained glass is from 15th century. Much of the glass is left survived WWII. I would make another visit to this site. You only need about 1 hour for a visit.
This church is like a Wedding Cake on the outside and for me very disappointing on the inside. I was told that it's plainess on the inside is because it was thought at the time that people would feel closer to God if there not so many decorations, this could be true but equally it could be false!!
The stairs to the organ loft are almost worth the visit by themselves. And hearing both tiny groups of instruments or magnificant organ-choral works in this space is marvelous. A gem of "flamboyant gothic" - tall and beatiful, but not as grand as the cathedral.
we had a tour of the chuch an dI was most impressed the exterior has wonderful carved stonework lookinig like lace and ht einterior is really beautiful . it is not to be missed.!
