Our visit to the medieval city was a haunting and mysterious experience. It seemed that air wafted through the streets, which summoned the medieval city back to life through the centuries. As we walked around the surprisingly lively town, we could almost hear the hoof beats of the horses and the whispering voices of history. This visit is an absolute must.
I spent two long afternoons just walking around. Now, that for me takes a lot of convincing! It is really a beautiful thing to do, the town is very lively and beautiful, even the less frequented parts to the south! If you are in Rhodes, that is where you should go first. Also, most landmarks are in here or close by. Also, you can do your shopping here. So, do not miss it!!
Old city is a photographers paradise, the views and architecture are amazing. There are great places to shop and eat inside and out of tge medieval city, although it does get a little pricey inside. It does take time to experience all parameters of old town so I would recommend spending a whole day in old town as theres alot to see and do and especially if your hotel isn't close. The marina and harbour is also right there and it is a good place to stroll and also check ferry prices to places like Marmaris, Turkey.
Love the history. Lots of shops and friendly people. Enjoyed the variety of shops. Lots of narrow streets to explore. Bring a map though as it's easy to get lost. And if you are looking for good jewelry at a very fair price, see Christos at Vergina, he is the friendliest and has lots of information to share if you take the time!
People are always looking further afield for luxury destinations and grand holidays but how can you top this? Rhodes has everything. As you walk through the medieval city you feel as if you have travelled in time, this is a truly unique experience. Plenty of shops selling various items. I bought honey and olive oil, I'm kicking myself as I wish I'd bought more, this was the best honey I'd ever tasted. Well worth a sit down and coffee/snack to appreciate the beauty. It was perfect weather well into October.
There are some charming aspects....if you can avoid the crowds and the miles of tourist shops that seem to occupy every inch of the old town, once you enter the walls.Early in the morning before the mobs descend,or early evening,it's pleasant. You can sit at a taverna and enjoy a coffee....come 10.00 it looks like the re-make of 'Ben Hur'.....thousands of people clogging all the wide AND narrow lanes.....more Tee Shirt shops that i have seen in decades. Some good ....off the beaten track restaurants....try Lonely Planet...I found several good ones for Rhodes and Crete in that book (now back in the library ).The Grand Masters palace is worth a visit....for a fee. There are also good walks around what was the moat of the old City.BarryAbbotsford,BC
What a great place to wonder around, the fortress walls are amazing all in tact including the round towers. Lots of shops, restaurants so much to see. Allow yourself a good deal of time to check out all there is learn the history and absorb the atmosphere of this ancient place.
Fantastic walk, and one that should not be missed. We entered the moat area via a small park called Platia Rimini, and immediately stepped back in time. Towering above us were the city walls on one side, and on the other the bank of the moat. Along the walk could be found various elements of the city’s defences, all very impressive considering their age, and it certainly gave the impression of impregnability. Towards the end of the walk was a modern amphitheater, beyond which was a small park. The walk finally ends near the ferry terminal, from where you can either walk back along the seafront, or turn left and walk in through one of the city gates. We took just over an hour to complete the walk at a very leisurely pace with the occasional sit down.
What can we say its absolutely lovely, tiny streets shops shops shops. Well worth a nights shopping and sightseeing.
The old city is beautiful. It is so nice I cannot put into a short review. Totally undeveloped, with great cafes, and attractions. There is a Hooka bar that is well worth a visit, many years old and worth it. Go there an enjoy worth it.
