We just returned from 4 nights in this wonderful Landmark Trust property. Yes, there are lots of stairs but they worked off all the food, don't know if the oven worked as never tried it...far too many choices of places to eat to worry about it. Loved the atmosphere and architecture in Padova, easy drive to Venice and a great time of year to visit, glorious views and the sun shone. Highly recommend it. Btw...you get to visit the Villa for free as a resident and be advised the venue is used for weddings and functions which I imagine could be noisy.
Was so looking forward to our weeks holiday here and wow! It did not disappoint. The apartment is tastefully restored/decorated and very comfortable. The views and accommodation are definitely worth the not insignificant trek from the parking area. And we even managed to work out the oven that had defeated previous occupants. The caretaker is helpful but not intrusive and we have the grounds to ourselves when the villa is closed to the public (the villa dei vescovi is owned by the Italian equivalent of the National Trust and so is open to the public; I had not realised this when I booked the property so was a bit anxious when I found out that I could potentially be woken up by hoardes of visitors outside but I needn't have worried. The villa opens 10-6 and most visitors seem to come to stroll around the bishop's palace and then sit on the loggia (which is ours after hours to enjoy a glass of wine on) and enjoy the views and tranquility). Wonderful!
We spent 3 wonderful days here with the Landmark Trust. The attic apartments are beautifully layed out with two spacious bedrooms and a comfortable living area. It's a great place to visit nearby Padua (Padova) which is a surprisingly busiling city with great attractions and plenty of restaurants. Padua is also a 30 minute train ride from Venice and costs only €4 (ish) each way on the standard train, don't bother with the express as you only save a few minutes on the ride and it costs about €16.The only problem with the villa, if you stay, are the steps! Once you climb the main out staircase you still have a spiral staircase to the attic. With baggage this can be had work.
Yes it is a very nice and pleasant place where to spend some spare time, walking around and, why not, reading a nice book. The restauration is really nice and well done, the place is well maintained and I have never found it crowded. So, if you are in Venice, in Padova or nearby I really suggest to go there for a very pleasant visit.
Owned by the FAI, the Itlain National Trust, it has restored after 4 years of work and is exceptional. The position and the views are breathtaking, the interior is well maintained, the sense of unhurried beauty pervades the building with settees, chairs available with an honesty box for drinks and food. You must make the effort to visit it.
We visited on the first Sunday in April, and they were holding the garden market. It was very lively in the courtyard and enjoyable to watch the Italians enjoy the start of spring. A gelateria van was parked in the courtyard as well and many partook of it. The villa itself is smaller than I expected it to be, but it is still very nice. I have visited many villas here in the Veneto, and this is one of the few that did a very good job furnishing the place anew. I really enjoyed seeing a furnished bathroom complete with tub, bidet and throne toilet; something I have never seen in a visit-able villa yet! FAI did a lovely job with this. The frescoes in the villa itself are maybe not the most amazing; one salon stood out to me in which there was lovely portraiture. Other than that, I have to say I have seen more amazing work in other villas as far as the frescoes are concerned. But this is not to say that they were not lovely as well! The whole staff I encountered was very helpful and polite; I accidentally walked in the villa without showing a ticket (oops!) but the clerk was very polite despite this. All in all, well worth a visit if you love the overall atmosphere of a villa. If you visit and enjoy the architecture and frescoes in this villa, I encourage you to also visiting some other, later Palladian villas. This villa is merely a taste of what the Veneto has to offer, albeit a lovely taste.
