If your a small taster don,t bother pretty but stick the smaller family wineries much friendlier with no fee. A group of eight in the party but Wirral Wirral missed out on our cash which we ready to spend
This is an attractive winery cellar door venue, in the heart of the McLaren Vale district. The location is a short drive from the McLaren Vale town, and other wineries are nearby. You can partake in traditional wine tasting, or purchase wine for consumption in the vicinity- they have a courtyard area as well as a picnic area. Also, you can purchase gourmet platters. There's a stage, and on the Sunday afternoon when we visited, a band was performing jazz music. The area is surrounded by vineyards, and there is a small viewing platform so you can take in the local scenery. This is a good place to visit on a day trip in the area, or have a relaxing picnic.
The 40min drive from the Adelaide suburbs is worthwile, free tasting always ends up with us buying at least one or three bottles. We shall be returning soon.
Out in the back blocks if you're not familiar with McLaren Vale but worth finding. Cellar door staff have always been very polite and yet laid back. I'm not keen on pushy cellar door staff so that's a great start. Gardens and facilities around the cellar door are really nice. Good place to relax. I've been to a few functions and they look amazing in the barrel hall or old buildings. Once you've seen the catapult (actually, I think it's a trebuchet) flinging watermelons around, you realise these guys also have a good sense of humour.BTW - great wines.
Went to Wirra Wirra winery in McLaren Vale in January, 2015 as we knew we liked some of their wines however if it is service you need, there was none...the staff were too busy socialising. We did buy some Chardonnay but might have bought a lot more if the staff had been more attentive. Stick to the smaller, family wineries.
My friends and I have been to Wirra Wirra many times in the last year and had an amazing time and this time was no exception. We went up on the weekend for a wine tasting, the staff are extremely friendly, helpful and a wealth of knowledge. I would definitely recommend Wirra Wirra to anyone who is visiting the McLaren Vale area!
I went there with some friends, we tasted a lot of wines and were all above the average. The environment is very friendly and welcoming, and the man that I think is the owner is simply a real professional and familiar at the same time, you can see the real passion for wine in his eyes. We spent a really good time in there, and because we are from Italy we shared our love for wine with the guys there. It was such an intimate and joyful experience, we'll be back for sure as soon as possible.
Ritchie the viticulturalist gave us a private tour of the vineyards and sheds, sharing his passion for biodynamics and explaining the processes behind the Amatour range. We learned so much about the biodynamic principles - planting by the lunar cycle, organic composting & spraying. Scott gave us a fantastic tasting experience and recommended a local favourite spot for lunch. Overall, a memorable experience that we are grateful for! Thank you so much and we'll be buying more of your great wines online. Cheers, Brendan & Hannah
In December friends and I visited Wirra Wirra winery in the beautiful McLaren Vale to experience a private tour and tastings lunch. Our mixed group of 6 were from SA and overseas and wine buffs to lesser and greater degrees (I personally love to drink wine but couldn't tell you much about wine chemistry; others are accredited wine connoisseurs). All of us had such a fantastic experience and have vowed to return at our next opportunity! From the beginning, we were greeted like friends by the impressively knowledgeable yet humble Tristan (one of our group let the cat out of the bag of his deserved Cellar Door Master accolades!) and taken on a tour which happily included the opportunity to ring the famous Wirra Wirra bell. The tour conveniently finished at a private room where we experienced generous tastings of the surprisingly large range of wines Wirra Wirra has on offer while Tristan taught us about both the overall history and current viticultural practices of the winery, including biodynamic principles in use.We were then awestruck to realise that the white linen-clad dining table in the adjoining room was set out for us and it was here that we would be enjoying our newly discovered wines with a sumptuous feast of fine fish, cured meats, crisp salads, cheeses, dips and crusty bread. Unlike platters on offer at other wineries, the servings were generous and we reluctantly had to admit defeat, not able to quite eat all that was on offer. Full to the brim with food, drink and newly acquired knowledge the group decided unanimously that this experience was "the best outing of 2014"! We're already planning a return trip to enjoy a cook-your-own barbeque upon the lawn with the family.. paired with a glass of wine of course!
Great setting and a winery which has a great selection of wines as well as the opportunity to indulge in a platter of tasty goodies.Well worth a stop so long as you are not the driver!
