The Arboretum was closed on a Saturday afternoon so we just wandered around for a while. We really wanted to see the mansion on the grounds.
I frequently visit Lockerly when I need to relax and clear my head. It is peaceful and constantly changing with the seasons. The conifer gardens are a favorite place to visit. A true treasure to the Milledgeville area.
The Lockerly home and grounds provide a wonderful opportunity to view the homes of yesterday and the grounds have a multitude of different shrub, flowers and trees .
A beautiful home and beautiful surroundings. Worth a visit. They use to have green houses and a bonsai collection that was amazing.
The docents here are wonderful and have lots of great stories and details to share about this home and the place it has held in the History of Milledgeville and Baldwin County. A true jem of the Old South with a special addition: the Arboretum. There has been a lot of work done on the trails and the property as a whole and it is showing well. A great place to walk in the spring and fall and do not miss their annual plant sale every year for great native varieties.
Lockerly Arboretum is like a little time capsule along the Antebellum Trail outside of Milledgeville, Georgia. The home was originally built by a wealthy family and now is a well restored museum giving everyone a glimpse into the past. I especially liked the view from the upstairs front windows that looked out over the fountain and gardens.
50 acres of beautiful gardens and walking trails. We really enjoyed walking the grounds of the arboretum. We had a tour of the mansion where they were set up for a wedding on the day of our visit. Recommended for those who would like a short walk through the trees.
The grounds are pleasant enough but it seems a bit of a stretch to call it a botanitcal garden. The geological kiosk had maps from 1976 and the display information was so washed out that it was unreadable. We enjoyed walking the trails and got to experience a comedic interpreation of Sherman's assault on the plantation - although I don't think it was meant to be that funny.
Lockerly Arboretum is one of the most beautiful areas in Baldwin County. Not only is there a unique antebellum home on the grounds but also acres and acres of flowers, trees, ponds, and paths for the publics enjoyment. Folks around the area go to Lockerly for weddings and other events. At Christmas, the house is decorated by local garden clubs for show in special tours. It is also a popular place for school field trips, photo shoots, and picnics. The guides are very knowledgeable, and most visitors leave ready to go home and plant!! There is a greenhouse with plants available for purchase as well as annual plant sales.
We arrived on a Thursday mid-day to find the gates open and our car the only one in the parking area. The beautiful big home looked closed so we opted to walk the pathways and it was very enjoyable. They feature varieties of conifers that we'd never seen before and the paths were easy to traverse (although a little hilly in spots). As we were leaving a groundskeeper came riding up in a golf cart and offered to open the house for us to tour at our leisure. We decided to leave that til next time, but I had peeked in the first floor windows (huge wide entry and enormous first floor rooms with all the furnishings) and I'm sure the inside tour would be a treat. Coordinate with the trolley tour at the Visitors Center for the days when they stop there with a guide.
