An extensive collection of Russian art from many periods. The building is beautiful. I'd rather have some more items from the last century to depict the Communist era, in order to evaluate it's artistic value objectively and also in relation to the rest of the pictures.
This museum is one of my favorites in Moscow, the last time I went there, I stopped 2-3 minutes before a selection of the most impressive paintings and it took me about 5 hours. So according to your tastes, you should visit directly the style you like best. If you're fond of icons, then skip all the rest and don't miss the few very rare icons of the chapel (ask your way to it, it's tricky). If you're more into portraits, don't miss the 18th century, and for "plein air", the end of the 19th. 20th century avant-garde is in another building near metro Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya. There is a cafeteria inside the museum, but there are good alternatives outside too. Another thing you should not miss are the temporary exhibitions of "revealed treasures" : once in a while, the dig up paintings and drawings from their reserves and expose them. Although it is advertised by posters, some exhibitions are behind a door that you could pass without noticing, so ask your way through.
Tretyakov Gallery is a "not miss art museum", not only in Moscow, but in whole Russia and far more in Europe. If you forget about names, and focus on art, you will discover parts of Russian history and culture that you couldn't imagine. The price of the ticket is very cheap, 450 R per adult, and children up to 18 years old are free.
If you are looking for Russian Art, this is the place. Make sure to see the Rainbow. One of the most amazing pieces I've ever seen.
The old building is a must see full of Russian art and artists not always found outside Russia. Also a good cafe.
Must see at any opportunity, but plan your day ahead. Check local school holidays, etc to avoid long lines. Perfect to get a glimpse of a misterious Russian soul.
The history of Russian art from icons to the present day. An unforgettable journey. Having this single central theme makes it very very special. One of the most precious places on the planet.
I didn't get the audio guide so perhaps I didn't get as much as I could have out of the experience because I was not blown away. This gallery charges 100rubles more for non Russian visitors (for both entry ticket as well as audio guide) and the last at Information didn't seem to happy about me questioning it.Photography is another 200 on top.
The gallery is very nice. on Thursday evening it is open until 2100 and the last entrance is at 2000. The signs from the Metro might lead int he wrong direction. once you find it you are glad. it is quite big, so you better plan a lot of time or chose what you want to see.
