A very old monetary, scenic with a nice pond in front to have a picnic at. The story goes, that when the Tsars had wives that they didn't want any longer, they ended up here. Worth the visit.
The convent has a long and fastinating history. Do take a guide. The most famous inhabitant of this place was tsarevna Sofia (a sister of Peter the Great), she rebeled against his power and paid for it by her freedom.
This convent is not "well kept", but neither does it feel like it was tarted up for tourists. When I visited there was an artist painting Russian scenes, esp. of churches. Quiet, charming, like this beautiful convent. This is so worth the trip.
We stopped at New Maiden Convent but did not go to the Cemetery. That was a part of our 2 days tour in Moscow just before New Year 2015. One of the front tower was under reconstruction. We enjoyed seeing this historic place and listen to our guide's story, walked around for a few minutes, took several pictures, would love come back and see it in Spring or Summer, have more time to see the cemetery and take the photos with the reflection on the water.
One of the oldest convents in Moscow. It is called New Maiden Convent as on the territory of the Kremlin there used to be Old Maiden Convent, where nuns were widows of royal family members. On the contrary, New Maiden Convent became home to daughters and sisters of royal family members who were still alive. In the Soviet times it was the Museum of the Emancipation of Women. But in this twist the terriory and buildings were preserved. You can visit both the Onvent and cemetery behind it. If you have some extra time take a stroll around the lake, it will offer you a few good photo opportunities.
Would not recommend really. No English translations so difficult to understand what you are seeing with just a small entry from your quide book. Cemetery was closed. Church is beautifulQuite an effort to get there. Do not attempt to walk back to centre of Moscow, it is a lot further than it seems on the map, took us almost two hours. We arrived by river boat which I would recommend. It is about a 20 min walk from the last but one boat stop.It is probably better to visit on an organised tour as you are taken by coach and will have a quide.
