Stopped in while visiting the area. Got some really good ice cream and sat out on the front porch area listening to the music provided by the store. Nice hometown feel to the place. A nice place to sit and relax while visiting the shops nearby.
Telephone: 870-285-3371Web Site: http://www.murfreesboroark.com/hawkins.htmlThe Hawkins General Store is just an all around fun place to visit. They are located just across the street from the court house. A nice walk up the street from the Queen of Diamonds Hotel. They have a soda pop machine that dispenses pop in little glass bottles. This was a real novelty for my kids. They also stock all the old retro candy that you would remember from your childhood. I didn’t even know that they still made some of the varieties of candy they stock. You can also purchase your diamond hunting equipment here. The proprietor of Hawkins has a great sense of humor and is fun to talk to.
Sitting across the street from the Pike County Courthouse, Hawkins is a step back in time due to the extensive renovations and addition of a fountain/sandwich counter. You are always felt welcomed there and they prepare great sandwiches and soups. You can also get a variety of drinks. A great place to stop on your way to or from Diamond State Park. They also carry an unsual inventory of items to top off your visit to Murfreesboro.
The "square" in Murfreesboro is charming and is obviously hoping you stop somewhere at its retailers when you are on your way to the "diamond mine" state park. The soda jerk side of "Hawkins General Store" was nothing to write home about. It is cute...but it is pricey for sure. Things in this shop are much more costly than they would be 15 miles up the road in Nashville Arkansas! IN fact...I felt a little insulted at some of the prices placed on things...you know...enough so that I decided to go down the road to buy a soda and ice cream rather than spend my money there.
Dewayne has really got this place looking fantastic. Great to see motivation in revamping a part of local history. As a kid we always loved getting to show in Hawkins. Thanks for bringing back a part of our youth. Highly recommend visiting if your in the area.
We spent an afternoon in downtown Murfreesboro, AR, to beat the heat after a day of diamond mining at crater of diamonds state park. There are just a few stores and I had checked this one out on the internet, so was excited to go there. I was disappointed! I was expecting an old time 5 & 10, like Dick's in Branson, but it was just a polished store with expensive cosmetics and games. No penny candy or anything fun for the kids. The woman who was working behind the ice cream counter was busy visiting with her three local friends and didn't even greet us until we had been in the store for about 5-10 minutes. She acted like we were intruding in their private conversation. The only plus was the ice cream, which was reasonable at about $2.50/cone. I don't know if she was the owner, but I sure hope not!
We had the best time visiting and shopping with DeWayne and Francey, owners of Hawkins Variety Store, on our recent trip to Arkansas!!! The shop is really cute and very old fashioned as is the building that it occupies. We did quite a bit of Christmas shopping... buying homemade canned food items, toys, and 3 pairs of beautiful reading glasses complete with a necklace to hang them on around my neck!!! My husband is now craving more of Francey's baked goods... They are YUMMY and perfect with the excellent Colombian coffee that is served. Along with warm Southern hospitality, they also carry an impressive stock of kitchen ware and gift items. Prices are a bit high compared to WallyWorld and $ stores, but they carry things that you just can NOT find in those spots! And... compared to the other gift shop in town that we visited... Hawkins Variety Store is actually much cheaper. We definitely recommend it!!!
Stopped in after a VERY hot morning of looking for diamonds and got some ice cream. Was very reasonably priced. Employee was extremely friendly and helpful.
This is a nice place to checkout with the old fashion soda fountain
Had best orange shorbet milkshake I ve had in my whole life! Retro style, cute icecream shop with lots of home-made or community-produced groceries on sale inside. Great place to visit!
