Visit in late afternoon so you can have a swim, dine in town and watch the sunset over the Porta. Walking distance from the ferry terminal.
If you come in the daytime, you get a good look at the carving of the stone and can puzzle over just how did they cut the stone, shape it, bring it to the site and assemble it? And what would the temple have looked like if it had ever been finished beyond building the Portara. Come back in the evening and marvel at the sunset from there and know why they chose to build the temple there. I read about the Portara years ago and wanted to go there and finally did and it was so worth the effort to get there.
The best view on the island..... A place which all the people who visit this wonderful island have to see.....
The sunset here is astonishing. You breath the sea and the mediterranean flora! Take your time, sit on a rock and simply listen, smell and watch. Pause.
From the port it takes a short stroll along the seaside and a 70-80 stairs to climb to get the best view of town and sea, amazing !When we were there ,the sea had big waves making noise, the sky was clear and it was a pleasure just to just relax there.
One of the best sunsets during summer months, get there for 19:30 with a bottle and snacks and be amazed. On breezy evenings you might get wet crossing the causeway - but well worth it
When you arrive in Naxos, you will almost immediately see the Temple of Apollo on the hill. It is worth the short climb up the hill to walk around it and possibly get some good photos. Wear appropriate footwear as the ground is uneven.
this place is so romantic so kitch so touristic than everyone can find there something to see to do to enjoy, but as you will understood, this is something like eiffel tower in Paris : you will never be the only one (or the only two) to appreciate delicately this singular hellenic and beautiful place this is so since ancient greek built this portique… anyway this place is worthwhile and kyklades will not be kyklades without this magnificent elegy to Apollon… from there the view on the old city of Naxos is something indeed
