This was our 6th visit to stay on Nisyros. We always like to visit the crater as its such an amazing sight. We are independent travellers and this time travelled with our adult daughter. We wanted to take her and hired two quads between us. The best time to go is around 4.30 - 5pm after the tour buses have finished as it gets very busy and is too hot. We almost had the crater to ourselves! Its an amazing journey down into volcano - if you are very scared of twisty Greek roads maybe best to take a bus down. Views are fantastic!
We took one day trip to Nysiros island, which included a visit to the volcano. The place is impressive being able to go down to the crater and take some photos. The entire area looks like from another planet, everything in a yellowish colour. Also the trip from Mandraki village to the crater was impressive too by passing the mountains and having spectacular views. Worth visiting if you are in Nysiros.
u can walk down from crater of volcano till u got to bottom of it. just see stream coming up the ground with rotten eggs smelt
Fantastic day out, the guide was so knowledgeable. Tip make sure you have sturdy footwear as you actually walk in the crater and its hot underfoot.
We can walk to crater volcano. Still seeing steam coming up from it. Amazing looking and entrance is free
We went when the staff outnumbered the visitors. You can walk in the crater and burn your hands by putting them too close to a fumarole spouting steam (yup. I'm a fool). There are multilingual displays which explain it all. Otherwise it's a smelly gigantic hole. It's huge also. Good to view it also from the villages of nikia and emborios that overhang the lip of the caldera.Well worth the €3. You can drive or go by coach fro harbour at Mandraki. We went by motorbike. It's a VERY long walk from mandraki, although the maps don't make that clear.
It's great that you can get 'up close and personal' with this volcano. If you have the time it's also very worth while climbing the mountains behind the volcano and walking down the goat paths into the crater.Brilliant!
the volcano crater is marvelous ... under your feet you can feel the sea of boiling volcanic lava ...but unfortunately you also can feel like a product in a huge tourist factory ... you go there by a vessel, then they put you into the bus and you have only about 1h to spent in volcano, because you are assigned to bus ... of course you can always rent a car, but if it is the best solution ?BTW: except volcano it worth going along the bay though the city to the stunning stony beach ..
if you go to nissyros you have to go there... it's increbile, magical, it seems to be on the moon, on another planet... it's an experience to do!
