The Courbet museum is a small museum (will take you approx 1 hour for a full tour) but really worth the journey. The museum is in the family house of the painter. Lots of painting, showing the evolution of Courbet style, linked to his personnal history. The nice thing is that we are not overwhelmed, but still having of full picture of Courbet's world. On top, it is a nice opportunity to discover the city of Ornans.
The Musee Courbet focuses on the works of Courbet with some other related special exhibits. The exhibit that was up during our visit concerned works of art that related to Courbet's L'Origine du Monde. Very different from other exhibits I've seen and probably not a good one for people who are more prudish or have young children. After visiting the museum, it's worth taking the time to do some of the hikes around the area. They are set up to highlight where Courbet took inspiration the works he painted locally. The hikes are a little difficult but not undoable.
ce musée est bien fait, agréable à visiter et ous fait découvrir un peintre de la région franc contoise
An intimate museum featuring works of Courbet, mainly portraits, landscapes and early works. None of his most controversial pieces are here or his large canvasses. But the museum does a good job explaining the progression of his work, the role politics played in his life, and his place in art history. A nice audio/visual presentation talks about his large canvass work focusing on "Funeral at Ornans". The museum is located on the Loue's River in the pleasant village of Ornans. Wander through the small central district afterwards. There are some nice bakeries and chocolate shops.
Très beau musée de facture moderne dans une maison ancienne . Belle présentation des œuvres nombreuses . Exposition temporaire originale . A conseiller .
A good collection of Courbet's work from his earliest paintings to his death. I don't know his work well, so I can't say how representative the collection is, but what's here is pleasing & nicely presented. The temporary exhibition of "erotic" art has some amazing works, including (loaned) pieces by Rodin, Da Vinci, Duchamps, & Degas - surely a mark of how well thought of this small gallery is. The gallery itself is a great mix of old & new, with very friendly staff.
The painter Gustave Courbet was born in Ornans. It is a fair tribute to open a museum in the house he was born. But how could you miss such a beautiful town as Ornans. It snuggly stretches in a narrow valley crossed by the Loue River. No wonder that a painter or any artist may be inspired by the beauty of this place. It seems that this wonderful site has escaped any classification so far. And yet it is worth a detour!
