Die Marktgemeinde Orth an der Donau liegt, wie der Name schon sagt am wohl berühmtesten Fluss Österreichs im Bundesland Niederösterreich, östlich von Wien.Das Schloss Orth an der Donau ist rund 1000 Jahre alt. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte änderten sich Größe und Form. Einschneidende Epochen, in baulicher Hinsicht, waren das 13. Jahrhundert, die Jahrzehnte nach 1530 und die Zeit zwischen 1700 und 1800, danach wurde das Altschloss als Schüttkasten für Getreide verwendet. 1875 beschloss man, dass Kronprinz Rudolf ein neues Schloss braucht und so wurde das „Neuschloss“, das rechts vom alten Schlosstrakt lag, renoviert.Nach dem Ende des 1. Weltkrieges ging das Schloss, das lange im habsburgerischen Besitz war, an die Republik Österreich, der es auch jetzt noch gehört. An die Marktgemeinde Orth ist das Schloss heute verpachtet.Ende der 1950er Jahre erhielt das Altschloss eine neue Funktion als Museum. Zuerst war es ein Heimatmuseum, danach ein Fischereimuseum und auch als Bienenzuchtmuseum wurde es geführt. Ab Anfang der 1980er Jahre befand sich hier das Donaumuseum. Heute hat es mehrere Bereiche. „An der Donau“ ist im Saal 1 zu erkunden. Saal 2 gehört „Jagd, Landschaft, Schloss“ und Saal 3 beherbergt alles rund um „Landwirtschaft, Alltag, Kunst“.Zwischen 2004 und 2005 wurde das Schloss komplett renoviert und seither sind hier das museumORTH; das Veranstaltungszentrum samt Festsaal und das Nationalpark-Zentrum des Nationalpark Donau-Auen mit einem großartigen Outdoor-Gelände zu finden.Es gibt viel zu bestaunen im Schloss Orth, so z.B. den Aussichtsturm, die Nationalpark-Ausstellung „DonAUräume“ und den Shop. Außerdem gibt es eine Führung durch die Innenräumen. Diese führte uns zuerst in eine Art Theatersaal, wo die Sage rund um den Ort an der Donau erzählt wurde. Danach ging es zu einer riesigen, in den Boden eingelassenen Karte, die den Abschnitt von Wien bis nach Bratislava zeigt. Wirklich beeindruckend, das ganze. Man kann auch auf der Karte herumgehen - mit Hausschuhen versteht sich. Rechts und links sind Ausschnitte aus dem Plan auf Holztafeln ausgeschnitten, die es auf der Karte zu finden gibt. Einiges war leicht zu erkennen, einiges ziemlich schwer und ich muss zugeben, meine Töchter fanden vieles vor mir. Die Führung, zu der sich außer wir noch drei weitere Personen gesellten, dauerte höchstens eine halbe Stunde, dann war das Ganze auch schon vorbei. Wir gingen noch gemeinsam zum Turnierhof und auch hier erzählte der Führer noch einiges rund um das Schloss, vor allem aber auch den Grünbereich rund um das Schloss, der „Schlossinsel“ genannt wird. Es gab nun die Möglichkeit, sich einem Ranger anzuschließen und mit ihm die Insel zu durchforsten, wir allerdings entschieden uns, nicht länger zu warten und gleich loszustarten.Die Schlossinsel ist nicht unbedingt groß, beherbergt aber viele sehenswerte Naturschauspiele. Gleich aufgefallen ist uns ein riesiges Nützlingshotel. Wir haben ein kleines bei uns zu Hause, aber so ein großes Teil wäre schon wirklich ein Gewinn für jeden Garten.

Schloss Orth is the self-styled gateway to the Lobau. Situated just outside Vienna it is a lovely little location for young families to experience a little nature and learn a bit about it. As a break from Vienna it is situated in a nice small town/large village about 20 minutes or so drive away. It is hard to get to Orth/Donau via public transport. Schloss Orth does not have enough to entertain older children but is a refreshing place with enough interest for visitors perhaps up to around 8.The Schloss itself is an ok building. It is large and grand enough if a little uninspired architecturally. The attraction is not really the Schloss itself but the small grounds behind it. The entrance to the Schloss is fully buggy/wheelchair accessible. The upper levels are also accessible via lift but there isn't actually anything to see up there. The separate exhibition requiring additional payment attracted no visitors unlike the grounds which did have patrons. The exterior includes a viewing platform which isn't particularly impressive. It doesn't reach above the treeline so the views are not exactly spectacular. The courtyard is served by the cafe and it seems like a nice enough place. The local cat is an additional attraction.The little castle island is the main part of the attraction though. It contains a set of different local wetland experiences for young visitors to be fascinated by. The bridge over what could be called a moat but is really a stream is a good start. The sheep on the other side are interesting but what makes the first attraction appeal are the little gopher-like things. There is also some hay for children to play in but it is cut into squares so little feet can get trapped in between the different stacks and it probably wouldn't have passed health and safety in other countries.The other exhibits include bees, animal trails, some adventurous moat-crossings for brave children to try, and a couple of learning experiences. The central feature is a pond with all sorts of creatures in it. The frogs are the most audible denizens and hold the attention of young ones. The pond also can be seen from within. An underwater viewing platform is a clever piece. The water is murky so there isn't that much to see but it is a good way to see fish at least.The back of the grounds leads to a forest trail. Those who enjoy a walk in the woods can do so for quite a long time. Parking is relatively abundant. On a busy day it was easy to find parking in the car park nearly opposite the Schloss and there also seemed to be plenty of spaces in front of the church next door.The one thing that is lacking is a properly shaded eating area. The courtyard offers that to some extent but the tables on the little island are in the full glare of the sun. There aren't really many grassy areas to have a picnic though the space between the Schloss and the church is the best option.

Karl I. übersiedelte im März 1919 mit seiner Familie in die Schweiz, um der Internierung in Österreich zu entgehen.daher das schloss auch nicht legal im besitz des staates österreich sein kann,diese jedoch offenbar trotz der verbrechen des 1. und des 2.weltkrieges sich an dem schloss bereichern versuchen.die habsburger sowie denen sie wirtschaftlich verpflichtet sind heute noch sind und ganz gewiss kein verständnis für enteignungspolitik haben,so wie auch die aliierten mit sicherheit die besitztümer habsburgs und anderer familien nicht österreich vermachten oder zusprachen.

Lieber Urs, danke für dein Feedback - in der Tat konzentriert sich das Schloss Orth an der Donau heutzutage auf seine Funktion als Nationalpark-Zentrum. Kennst du schon die weiteren Marchfeld-Schlösser Eckartsau, Marchegg und Schloss Hof?
