This is the best historical architectural jewel In Pavia and is visually impressive. You must see it.
A beautiful example of the Lombard-Romanesque style, this church has its best features inside. Not because its facade was left unfinished; au contraire it must have been stunning in its days of glory. but the bas- and high-relief carvings which adorned the front were made out of local arenaria (sandstone?); a soft stone which is easy to carve, but offers little resistance to weather and pollution. So there is little left to admire outside (beside the lines of the architecture).Examples of what it must have been are inside, in the capitals of the crypt which are adorned with monsters and bishops and fools and all kind of strange figures.Very quiet, cool, ideal stop during an afternoon walk through the cityI give only 3 stars because I do not believe that everything can be 'above average', and compared to other historical churches (San Teodoro, San Pietro) in Pavia this one provided less 'oomph', but what a beautiful average this is !
If you love history then this would be a great place to visit! amazing architecture and art work! I loved how it felt like nothing had changed for decades! Really feels like you are stepping back in time! Amazing!
Great place to visit for romanesque sculpture fans. It is one of the most beautiful church in Italy!
Time stands still in such an old church. Well worth a visit, Charlemagne was crowned in this church.
