We were a bit unsure of going inside the cathedral but as it was free we dropped in for look and didn't regret it. The decorations are very beautiful. There is also a very impressive organ which struck up with a rendition of Ave Maria. The information however is limited so if you are interested in the history then it is advisable to join a tour of some kind.
A must see in Pecs. If you wait for a tour to come through they turn on the lights and you an see thoe church much better. Also, for tours they play the huge organ...while this is a digital reprocduced sound the quality is excellent....unless you are a professional organist you woul not know the difference.
The interior was beautiful with lovely frescoes, but not much stained glass. Unfortunately there was scaffold covering one of the towers.
The cathedral dominates one end of town, and it's definitely worth a visit. Don't miss the crypt, which holds interesting mosaics and other religious artistry.
Pecs cathedral is the landmark of the city, and in these days the renovation is finished. You can climb he south-eastern tower, 266 steps up & down. On a sunny day you can sit down onto the south faced steps of the cathedtral, and make a short stop while sightseeing.
Cathedral dates back from 11th centurz, but it was rebuilt several times. Before you enter the courtyard you will pass small bridge over the Roma ruins, but be carefull on rainy days, it is slippery. When you pass the bridge and the gate, Cathedral i on the right. Left from the Cathedral is Bishop's Palace. Behind it you will find small park Barbican and there you will find old city walls with the tower. If you buy the ticket, you can visit Cathedral, the Dom Museum and the Bishop's Wine Cellar where you can drink a glass of wine.
this is a beautiful building situated near the square. Worth visiting there is plent to see in and around the cathedral.
This Cathedral is somewhat different than other. Yes pews Altar etc But the wall of this Cathedral and the pillars are somewhat unique. It looks like that the Cathedral got a wallpaper all over it but I could not figure out if it wallpaper or hand painted pattern. The pillars had gold and white and looking like brick on top of one another.I sat down and admired the pattern of the walls and the pillar.I walked under the ground and more lovely pattern of painting on the ceiling.Small donation is asked upon the way out entrance. There are cleaning work outside the exterior building at the moment. You cannot see the Cathedral from the town but walk behind it you will see it. The early Christian cemetery are nearby.
Of all my memories of the Cathedral - the four towers, the roof, the extraordinary gate, the gorgeous coffered ceiling, the lower level with the wooden carvings on the steps down - the one I treasure most is of the magic moment when the organ suddenly started playing, and even a group of schoolchildren were quiet.
The building is so simple and yet so beautiful. It has the most beautiful gate made out of iron leaves, and the entrance is imposing and beautiful. We were there on a Sunday, and the church was full. Amazing indeed!
