Awesome and very interactive. You need to go two days if u actually want learn and take time with kids. The second day is half off.
When our sons were still at home we were members of the Science Center and visited often. Now when we have friends and family in town with kids that's a favorite place to visit. There are lots of hands on exhibits and opportunities to learn in a fun setting. For teens the Sports Works is a great time but it can get crowded so go early.Check the web site for the prices so you aren't surprised at the cost.
My daughter and I went to the Carnegie Science Center on a Saturday morning while my husband was at the Convention Center. The place is nice with different hands on activities. We got to sit in a booth and experience what an earthquake feels like and my daughter got to play with various exhibits which is great for the kids. Even though I enjoyed the hands on activities, my favorite part of the center was the huge train exhibit showing historical Pittsburgh. While it was nice seeing the various trains, it was the detail that was put in the creation of historical Pittsburgh and the movement of the various figures in the train exhibit that impressed me.For the price of admission, you get to go to the Highmark Sports Works center with is next door to the science center. This allows visitors to learn how science plays out in a sports environment. It was hilarious seeing my 10-year old bouncing on a trampoline trying to reach an object and playing air hockey. They have simulated roller coaster, but I wish they had more machines that could reduce the long wait time. By the time we got to the Sports Works facility, it was getting crowded so there would be times where you are waiting to play a game or ride a simulated coaster. My daughter waited over an hour to ride a 5-minute coaster but she enjoyed it and thought it was worth the wait.If I had to nitpick, it would be in the price. I found that the price was a little high, and if you are not a member of the Carnegie Science Center, you will not be able to utilize any discounts in admission or food. Speaking of food, the prices at their diner in the basement was high, so we had some beverages and went somewhere else to eat. We also skipped the IMAX theatre and just focused on the exhibits and the Sports Works center.I still like the Carnegie Science Center and would recommend it for parents with young children, just prepare to pay more and I would get there as early as possible to avoid the crowds. There is a fee for parking, we got a lift to the center so we didn’t utilize their parking facility.NOTE/TIP: Before you go to the Science Center, check to see if there are any discount coupons for admission. Found out when I arrived there are no discounts for AAA members. Admission price can really add up if you have are attending the center as a large family. At the Highmark Sports Works, if you are there after Noon on a weekend, prepare to wait to try some of the activities or ride the simulated roller coasters.
I don't normally write reviews about stuff, but two of your workers in the sports works building really stuck out. Julius and Paris, two young men working the trampoline, were absolutely wonderful. Keeping the kids occupied while they waited their turn and cheering them on when they were jumping. They seemed to really like the kids instead of just doing their jobs. Just absolutely the people that should be representing your business. Please let them know they are doing everything wonderfully!
Our 2 teenage son's loved the interactive part of the center sponsored by the local health system. Then they competed against a robot for basketball free throws for an hour. There are plenty of activities to entertain the parents, too
Attended a sneak preview event and had so much fun interacting with robots and launching rockets! The IMAX movie was a bonus and fantastic. The staff was very helpful with lots of great information. A wonderful place for kids of ALL ages!
This museum was a great half day experience. the imax movie with popcorn was a perfect ending to our day at the museum. our favorite exhibit was the robots. take time to experience the hands on robotic innovations if you have a school age child. the sports minded will like a challenge in sportworks but some of the popular challenges do have long lines. Nice day with the kids.
I'm a scientist so was looking forward to visit a place loaded with cool science exhibits. It was awful! Mostly displays here and there and some hands-on activities. But nothing special. The IMAX was the best part. Way over priced.
I think the target age group would be 5-13. We went on a Saturday and it was a tad busy. We did pay extra for the movie and laser show. Laser show was very boring for adults and kids. Total waste of money. The movie was cool. We might return if we are back in town and need something to do.
We went on a Saturday which was maybe our big mistake (though as a working adult, I don't know when else you'd go except Sunday which I wouldn't predict to be much better). The museum boasts 4 floors, but really it's breaks down more like 1/2 floor, a floor, 1/2 floor and a floor unless you're over something like 7 yrs and then it's a 1/4 floor. There were lots of interesting looking exhibits but the majority of them weren't really available since the kids were playing with them with little to no supervision. Overall, it really felt more like a mediocre children's museum for $18 per adult and we would not go again.
